I caught up with Katherine Rolinson who is a certified master composter, who showed me how to clean up my gross technique.
So what's your take...Green or Gross?

i have three! Two outside and one inside! Google vermicomposting or, go to vermicomposting on Garden Web to learn more about it.
It is not hard. Now I don't put out as much trash, and the trash I do put out never smells bad. My garden has almost enough compost. I started the inside one to eat up things I didn't want to put outside.
Some people without gardens have small worm farms in their kitchens, they use the compost for house plants or give it away to people with garden who then give them herbs and tomatoes in exchange! Not a bad deal.

And my friend Erin just sent me a note about soldier black flies. New to me! looking forward to checking it out! (and getting some additional compost bins :)
"I have a worm bin and 3 other cooking ones. You should check out black soldier flies. They will compost everything you give them in days. But you wouldn't want it in your house and they only work in warm weather. http://extension.oregonstate.edu/news/story.php?S_No=802&storyType=garde&quo... - 3 years ago

It's green AND gross. If you want antiseptic life, that just ain't the way nature works.
Just remember to wash your hands, folks.

You can also check for state co-ops they may have all kind of classes and even places to see new things/ways to do things being used. Here we have the Penn State co-op with classes for everything from gardens for limited mobilty to classes to become master gardeners. And as leahl mentioned these too are with the county. Sometimes state Clean-ways are involved, also.

I had a giant leaf pile in a low area of my yard and I put composting worms in it and later used the earth they created for plants. I put vegetation and leaves and it did not stink.
