Acting up #5: Willing to risk arrest

joshuakahnrussell
I answer a question about the value of mass protest and risking arrest, and move on to talk about community organizing, and how the two reinforce one another. Then we move on to head to a meeting for Global Justice Action, rant a little bit about corporations cashing in on the rhetoric of change that is electrifying the country, and talk about how the conversations in classrooms, town halls, community centers, and church basements, paired with the 1000+ people who are being trained for this action is really what is going to propel the movement forward beyond whatever political will and leverage we are able to create on the Hill for strong climate change policy.

Check out info on the largest protest and direct action on global warming in history: www.capitolclimateaction.org

p.s. the sign behind me in the beginning really should say "support hurricane survivors" not "help hurricane victims" but oh well....

    • I could see marching and getting arrested for Marijuana being worth it to me but not much else!

Maybe if another Terry Schiavo ends up on all over the media again.

    • I think there is some truth to that, but I think we can get better results by being smart and working united in great numbers. That is the key I believe, is getting people to come together under a National Strike Day in great numbers. Read up on how France has gotten what they demand, just Google France Strike day.

Thanks for you message, I sincerely appreciate every individual's feedback.

Best wishes for our fragile nation,

    • We all need to be willing to risk arrest. this is our country. the President works for us and answers to us [supposedly] or did... a long time age when we were armed and that is why we are suppose to stay that way. sometimes you gotta speak loudly.

    • Haha, snarkiness warrants attention. Maybe you guys should stop trying to get arrested and start being assholes. Anyways,

If we’re going to acknowledge climate change as a serious problem we at least acknowledge the proposed solutions with some degree of seriousness. In other words it’s hard to take someone seriously when they describe getting arrested as a means to an end without having the ability to definitively determine whether or not getting arrested will be a means to an end.

Granted I understand the need to broadcast the problem, which is exactly what this whole initiative is about. So I’m not really against this whole thing. I just don’t like exaggerated and romanticized hypothetical questions.

In the end success is probably going to be measured by the implementation of sustainable government policy, and more importantly sustainable technologies. So shouldn’t we hear about those sort of things, or is all publicity good publicity?

I hear you guys want to further the discussion and that’s great. I’m just having a problem hearing your solution(s) over everything else.

Love your spirit, and our government has brought that to the tip of many American tongues. I really think though if we did set up representatives in every state, every city and so forth we could have a highly organized peace freedom Institute that can mobilize huge protest that freeze everything, until our demands are met.
