PVC: The Poison Plastic

PVC (polyvinyl Chloride) plastic, commonly referred to as vinyl. Is one of the most hazardous consumer products ever created. PVC is dangerous to human health and the Enviroment throughout its entire life cycle, at the factory, in our homes, and in the trash. Our bodies are contaminated with poisonous chemicals released during the PVC lifecycle, such as mercury, dioxins, and phthalates, which may pose irreversible life-long health threats. When produced or burned, PVC plastic releases dioxins, a group of the most potent synthetic chemicals ever tested, which can cause cancer and harm the immune and reproductive systems. PVC is useless without the addition of a plethora of toxic additives, which can make the PVC product itself harmful to consumers. These chemicles can evaporate or leach out of PVC, posing risks to children and consumers. New Car Smell? New shower curtain smell? That's the smell of poisonous chemicals off-gassing from the PVC. One of the most common toxic additives is DEHP, a phthalate that is a suspected carcinogen and reproductive toxicant readily found in numerous PVC products. Children can be exposed to phthalates by chewing on vinyl toys containing dangerous phthalates, the European Parlaiment voted July, 2005 to permanently ban the use of certain toxic phthalates in toys. One EPA study found that vinyl shower curtains can cause elevated levels of dangerous air toxins, which can persist for more than a month. PVC plants are disproportionately located in low-income communities and communities of color, making the production of PVC a major enviromental justice concern. Communities surrounding vinyl chloride facilities suffer from groundwater and air pollution. In 1999, the federal government measured dioxins in blood samples taken from 28 residents who lived near PVC facilities in Louisiana. The testing revealed the average resident has three times more dioxin in his/her blood than the average U.S. citizen. PVC cannot be effectively recycled due to the many different toxic additives used to soften or stabilize PVC, which can contaminate the recycling batch. Most consumers do not know that a 3 in the recycle symbol indicates that the plastic is made of PVC, and therefore recycle those products, inadvertently rendering thousands of potentially recycled containers useless. In fact, just one PVC bottle can contaminate a recycling load of 1000,00 PET bottles. The Center for Health, Enviromental and Justice BE SAFE network has launched a PVC campaign to encourage major Companies to phase out their use of PVC and to support policies that phase out PVC.

    • Just another "expert" rambling away without providing any supporting evidence . . .

PVC has been used extensively for years and it hasn't killed off humanity, but i'm forgetting there must be some underlying conspiracy, right?

don't forget plastics ARE recycled. first they were crude oil, then we 'recycled' that into plastic... now we just need to recycle the plastic into other things. I ask you which is better to have littering the planet, vast fields of oil and petrol, or vast fields of plastic... I don't really see a difference.

    • hydrokat: no debate from me, I agree that it's a problem, I just think that it's only a part of the greater whole. few people know anything about plastic-out-gassing, let alone how the estrogens and related hormone based molecules even effect us. I just think it's funny that PVC get's any attention at all, when the drinking water running through that PVC pipe under your sink has more toxins (some that actually exacerbate out-gassing) than the PVC itself.

here's an article from National Geographic. it will make you sick... if you care at all.

You know that's the point. We are literally surrounded by the stuff. My main concern is the exposure to Children. When We were growing up there was not so much. But it's everywhere now. Even though large outlets like Walmart and Target have removed childrens products made from it like bottles and such. You can get it at the .99 Store. That's where they tried to get rid of all the lead based paint toys. The article is for information. I know that there are different sides depending on who You talk with. Alot of My critics don't have Children yet so they don't concern themselves. I wrote the article to inform Mom's. The idea is to inform and Educate. The pic and comment were to entertain a little. Thanks for the input.

    • lol... its called out-gassing. ALL plastics do it. they ALL release toxic esters and monomers. that's just how it goes. the styrofoam in your matress is more of a hazzard. not to mention the crap they add to public water...

I believe the article speaks for itself. The information is not any secret. Many non chemists out there need to know. I'm passing info. I'm not going to debate every article to You folks out there. Your free to submit Your own article if Your so inclined. I'm happy you got a laugh out of it.

You are incredibly fear mongering and it's incredibly annoying. Please relax and enjoy life - all your fear must make life pretty unbearable.

Really, I enjoy it. I don't do it to scare anyone. My intent is to inform and pass along important info. The good news is We finally get to relax when We die..Besides, as you can see by My pic I'm about 2ft. from the grave anyway. Try to humor and old Man. I'll be gone soon enough anyway, then You'll all be done with Me..Please, resume fun and remember: In the next world, Your on Your own..bye, hydro.

    • From the article "poisonous chemicals released during the PVC lifecycle, such as mercury"

Wait...I'm sorry...My chemistry isn't all that great (just 2 semesters of it). How does PVC release mercury any amount greater than a whole lot of other things (such as coal, old mirrors, land fills, various hand held games, etc.)?
