Texas leads nation in coal ash waste production

" As the Environmental Protection Agency moves toward controlling coal ash waste from power plants, a new study finds Texas leading the nation in current and proposed production of the waste, which contains toxic metals.

Coal ash waste has been in the news since a holding pond dam in Tennessee broke on Dec. 22, spilling 1 billion gallons of sludge. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said this week that the agency will examine safety issues nationwide and the waste's effect on water quality.

"This waste has never been regulated at the federal level," Peter Lehner, executive director of the Natural Resources Defense Council, said Thursday in releasing his group's state-by-state study of coal ash production. "This is a very welcome announcement by the Obama administration."

The environmental group mined federal reports and state permit files across the country to estimate existing and proposed coal plants' ash waste production.

Texas ranked first, with existing plants producing 13.5 million tons per year that contain an estimated 8,915 tons of toxic metals such as arsenic, mercury and lead. This was based on the types and amounts of coal the plants reported burning. "

    • given the high percentage of bad things in Texas, math tells my I have a high chance of encountering bad things when I go there whether it be crime, poverty or racism. If I was told that 95% of people in a city had polka dotted skin would it be racist to expect that most people I would meet would have polka dots?

      I’m not from Texas.

      As my picture clearly shows I’m brown, and yes my “color” has little to do with anything.

      On another note, despite your facts you’re not making any sense. I’ve disagreed with the idea that nothing good can come out of Texas. Your argument does nothing to confirm Jiji’s claim, its just a knee jerk reaction to my protest of the anti-Texas Klan rally.

      You can’t argue against racism while at the same time advocating the same disastrously stupid train of thought that produces and ultimately attempts to justify blind hatred. So to break it all down;

      To call everything that comes out of Texas bad or wrong, based upon the facts you’ve provided or any “facts” for that matter is stupid. In fact its not just stupid its f*#%@!* retarded.

      Jiji.. This is a message board, you don’t have to repeat what you said. You hate Texas and everything in it, great good for you.

      You’re part of the reason why the world still suffers from racism, sexism and tribalism. You’ve condemned everything inside of an imaginary boundary for what, your hatred of men wearing funny hats? Seriously if you’re going to say something stupid then at least make it funny.

      First, I'm still waiting for that one good thing that came out of Texas. Second, I hate Texas for many reasons, but not for wearing funny hats (where the hell did that come from?). Third, I wasn't being funny or stupid. Fourth, talking about stupidity trying to be funny, look at your own posts "I wish tobey was stillborn" plus many more.

      Right so racism;

      1. animosity toward other races: prejudice or animosity against people who belong to other races

      2. belief in racial superiority: the belief that people of different races have different qualities and abilities, and that some races are inherently superior or inferior

      is wrong and dumb but prejudice;

      irrational dislike of somebody: an unfounded hatred, fear, or mistrust of a person or group, especially one of a particular religion, ethnicity, nationality, or social status

      based on state identity is just peachy..

      Is the picture above starting to make sense…No

      Yeah I didn’t think so.

      Thanks alright I got more below.

      Ricky I am sorry but pointing out the particular characteristics of people occupying an area of similar social and environmental conditions is not racist. Being a "Texan" does not imply some ethnic group. It means that you live in an area with strong established social attitudes and prejudices. It is a matter of mathematics that the state of Texas has the fifth worst median income in the nation, one of the highest rates of families living in poverty, has been responsible for fully one quarter of all prisoners executed in the United states in the last twenty five years and historically has had been responsible for the largest numbers of lynching, burnings and castrations of black men since the civil war.

      Mike I am sorry but pointing out the particular characteristics of people growing up under similar social and environmental conditions is not bad. Being a "nigger" does not imply just some ethnic group. It means that you grew up with strong established social attitudes and prejudices. It is a matter of mathematics that black people have the fifth worst median income in the nation, one of the highest rates of families living in poverty, have been sentenced to death and executed more than any other ethnic group in the United states in the last twenty five years and historically has had been responsible for the largest recorded incidences of robbery, murder and rape since time began.

      These are the facts gosh darnit, and they’re the only things that pop up in my brain when I think of black people!

      wow Ricky how interesting. Still doesnt change the fact that the state of Texas is the one of the nations leaders in poverty, racism, executions and coal ash pollution. Not sure what color yall are but I'm thinking that it doesnt much matter.
