    • So I gathered a bunch of people together in a park that overlooked san francisco. We were across the bay, and it was hazy, but the dramatic change I was hoping to see was not apparent. sigh. we had fun reading stories by candlelight.

    • I say to hell with Earth Hour and let's roll out that new Carbon Tax! That'll teach us to reduce our Carbon Footprint! LoL,only joking. I turned off my power, well,in actuality my room is pitch black all day everyday except for the glow of my cpu's screen. But I put it in sleep mode for the hour...does that count? =)

    • before leaving my parents told me to turn off the lights for earth hour, which sounds stupid to me coming from them since they run electric heat, wash their clothes in hot water, and leave TVs on when they are not home. Kinda like when they get at me for making home made rice and sturfry (which mom says I don't eat enough veggies when I use 3 cups worth in each sturfry) when they deep fat fry their food.

    • I did it! That was rough I have to admit but anything for the earth right. I gave my hour. I hope a lot of people did the same. My laptop ran out of power there after about 45 minutes so those last 15 were spent in the dark. I love electricity.

    • BTW, I can't participate in "earth hour" when I'm at work. Ah well. I suppose everything is off at my house, so maybe I'm technically participating!

    • That's nice, all fine and dandy, but I don't see The Great Castle of Uncle Charlie on that list!! And I paid good money to have my name on that list!

    • Watch, all this will be televised and video gathered by helicopter, mobile reporters, and other power consuming devices to report on the saving of energy.

      Getting dizzy yet?

There will be more energy spent in reporting this "green" story than will be saved by turning off the lamp.

How is it global warming propaganda? Because when you go to the Earth Hour website you get this message about global warming.

"We need the world to take action on Global Warming. And you can start here. Use Earth Connect to share your thoughts about Global Warming. In the lead up to Copenhagen, your words will be more important than ever before."

Everyone who works for a living is actively fighting "global warming" whether they know it or not even as the earth is apparently cooling.

    • I hope this 1 hour is just an example for people to see & learn how easy it can be to make small lifestyle changes that result in greater benefits to all - especially Mother Earth. But if we're going to make significant strides at reducing CO2 emissions, a lot more switches & electronics need to be turned off on a regular basis when not in use, & not just for 1 hour a year. For example, if done weekly, this would be 52 times more effective while getting an energy saving message out to the people who need to hear it the most & maybe more than once.

    • What will most of these people do the rest of the year? If we conserved everyday we wouldn't need this. And after this hour is over, Las Vegas will light up again and the water fountains will flow until next year. So will this even bring about a net effect of saving anything in the long run? How much in the way of GHG emissions in tons will this actually save that won't be eaten up by what is spewed out after the hour passes? Anybody know?

    • My lil bro says that when large amounts of people do this it puts strains on the power stations and could cause an overload of power and black out cities. And since all American power plants are pretty much connected, it could cause a domino effect in theory and wipe out all power in the US. That is if the strain was great enough and enough people participated. I tend to agree with him. Sounds FUN! Everyone please participate in this event!

Actually it's a legit concern. It isn't the drop but those who come back online that will cause the black out. The drop won't be bad, but the system would need to reduce load then ramp back up to handle the draw coming when everyone turns back on at 9:30.

There was a show that explored this exact problem in the UK during the soccer championship's tea time break. All those electric kettles poised a threat to the grid, and they had to time the power injection just right to handle the surge. They did it, naturally.
