From Time Magazine, 03 April 2009: The Joint Institute For The Study Of Atmosphere And Ocean and The National Oceanic And The Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory continue to show, with scientific computer models and plain ol' prognostication, the Arctic ice troubles - like lower yearly ice coverage, record melting and higher surrounding temperatures. The past 6 years has been the worst span of time for the Arctic,... with no abrupt solution on the horizon. (a horizon that will soon rise)
Every time I read this kinda stuff,... my stomach drops,... and I think we're screwed. But futility shouldn't mean we stop trying. Maybe we can still make things a little better - with some determination, sacrifice and elbow grease. I'd say the worst part,... is people too naive, proud, greedy or skeptic to see what's happening. What's obvious to some,... is a scam to others. The only way it's not too late,... is if we ALL unite to at least try to solve our biggest problem.

do your part. recycle. turn appliances off. become a vegetarian. ride a bicycle. take the stairs. light a candle. grow your own food. improve your life and the lives around you. all it takes is the decision to do so.
keep up the environmental posts, jan. maybe one of these days people will get it thru their thick heads that this is the MOST important issue... maybe of all human time. - 3 years ago

I so agree with you. This is the most important challenge we face now, and I am committed to not giving up. For the ones I love and for the planet I love, that is simply not an option.

This is a scary scenario. What makes it terrifying is what was not mentioned. As tundra and sea ice melt they uncover vast fields of methane. It takes a small ratio of methane and oxygen to become toxic to animals and plants. Unless you are a deep sea organism that can convert methane to food you will be in deep do-do.

The Russians are appealing to some world council to gain ownership of the arctic, they want to develop the oil reserves and drive ice breakers through what is left.
We must become activated and radical and find ways to prevent instead of respond (too late) to the decimation of our planet. Our ice must be made untouchable to all of the forces of humanity while we try to find ways to survive this crisis we caused.
