TV host Doug McConnell of "Open Road" (and formerly "Bay Area Backroads") shared his 10 favorite beaches in Hawaii in an episode that premiered last night on KQED. Too bad he couldn't share more accurate pronunciations of their names.segment called "Best of the West," McConnell started out promisingly enough with his No. 10 choice, Kauai's end-of-the-road Kē‘ē Beach, approximated as "Kay-ay." He also acquitted himself with No. 8, the Kona Coast ("There's not much sand here, but the black lava-lined coastline is beautiful and makes for some of the best scuba diving you'll find anywhere," McConnell noted.)
Maui's "Big Beach" (No. 5) understandably caused no problems, although it might have been nice to note its Hawaiian names, Mākena ("abundance") or Oneloa ("long sand.") McConnell also nailed Oahu's Waimea Bay (No. 4), Waikiki (No. 2) and "the entire North Shore of Kauai" (No. 1).
