    • It won't be long before there is another picture of him and the bear - only it will be headlines calling him an idiot, because the bear loved him to DEATH. Just because it's cuddly looking doesn't mean the natural instinct of this bear won't kick in and he'll be lunch.

    • i want that guy's life.
i think he is a lot different than Timothy Treadwell. he raised the bear through its entire life, the bear probably views him like a mother and i would even say loves him. but treadwell was in the wild with random bears. most of the bears he knew and they probably knew him from being out there so many times, but they were wild and hungry omnivores and definitely don't view him as family but probably as food. bringing a baby into the family could be dangerous tho, of course, but that's true with even a dog.

    • Not just mauled but eaten alive. After the officials were done with the tape they offered the family the opportunity to view it. After the families declined the tape was destroyed. There were reports that it was absolutely horrific.

You seem to be correct. The information in the report I remember was incomplete. This link is to some very interesting research on this incident.

GREAT article. Two things I thought were unforgivably stupid from a backpacker's perspective (besides willfully being that close to a grizzly)

"Open snack food was found in the tent untouched, so they were about to eat a quick snack before bed as the sound of a bear is heard outside. Tim leaves the tent and walks away from the tent and towards the bear."

They should have known better to never ever ever eat in your tent. Whether or not the smell of food caused the bear to come in the first place is unknown, but it's a distinct possibility.

I'm pretty sure the rule of thumb is to eat at least 100 yards away from where you sleep, especially in bear country.

"Bear spray is allowed, however Tim had quit carrying bear spray for protection several summers prior to his death."

There's absolutely no reason not to carry bear spray as a deterrent in case of an unavoidable confrontation. It's completely ridiculous that these people with as much experience they have to forgo that simple precaution, a simple precaution that doesn't even harm the bear.

Personally, if I was in the Alaskan wilderness I would have wanted a high caliber rifle . . . but this park didn't allow guns, so I can't fault them for that.

People in the backpacking community often find out all of the relevant possible details for events like this if for no other reason to learn from them. Great article, and thanks for sharing. =)

    • Yeah, Timothy Treadwell was the nutter I was thinking of. I didn't realize his girlfriend was mauled to death too. =/

Anywho, this Anderson guy is playing with fire and I hope he doesn't introduce anyone else to the bear, let alone a possible future baby with his wife . . . I can see the headline already.

    • lucidstone- I thought of exactly the same thing when I first read the headline. He lived among the grizzlies, giving them names, insisting, despite warnings from biologists, that they were perfectly harmless. Well, he and his girlfriend were the afternoon lunch of a grizzly, and he learned the hard way. Eventually, no doubt, Mr. Anderson will learn this as well.

    • You mean where Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend, while taping one of their continuing segments on how bears and humans can coexist, was eaten alive screaming all the way?

    • This reminds me of the guy that documented himself living amongst wild grizzly bears . . . and then was eventually mauled to death.

Do not approach bears in the wild, let alone grizzlies. They are wild and very dangerous animals that are quite capable of ripping your face off. (omg . . . I kind of sound like Dwight right now . . . I'm gonna go cry for a bit)
