If every day is Earth Day...Do you have the desire to take on a personal challenge?

leahl
There have been posts and discussions over the past week or so re: the relevance of Earth Day. For me, it provided a deadline to make a new commitment to action this year. I had one guiding principle: I wanted to address the growing issue of pollution in the oceans. I wanted the project to be tangible, measurable, hands on, and provide me with a way to go to one of the places I love most on this planet...the oceans. As it turns out, it's also providing me an opportunity to face a huge fear, so I feel like I'm getting two for the price of one. The project: find out how much plastic pollution I have personally contributed, and then go take it out. I took my first diving class this past Saturday...and should be ready....soon. So my promise: Is that I will share resources on this topic: what organizations are already doing this, how to find out what our personal influence is, and hopefully some fabulous underwater photos.

So join me! Looking forward to hearing what other people are willing to take on this year, and hope it brings you joy in the process.

    • How about shopping carts? You know the ones that are every where accept at the store! Can tabs are an easy one for people.I see clean up projects all of the time because i live near the beach and the pinelands are next to me.

I live in an area of meadows and tidal wetlands that is now being converged upon by asphalt islands of shopping centers. I look at blue heron and white egret.and owls , osprey. just to name a few. From my door i see meadows with shopping carts. i know the birds do not like them or they would be living up the street at the shopping centers.I grew up here and watched my small town that thrived on fishing and tourism turn from a nice town to a host for every chain you can imagine.the shopping carts are so many they are every where.including in my precious meadow.I now look at the back of a supermarket.

    • I have an idea. If you picked up just one piece of trash a day, on your walk to work/lunch or wherever, It would be a much cleaner place. If everyone did this, it would make a difference.

"Would you be interested in keeping the trash so you could show how it accumulates?"

I was leaning more towards throwing the trash out, rather than collecting it.

    • I got to thinking last night: if this could be a place where people submit photos or videos of what they are doing, and then Current could create a video out of the submissions. What do you think?

    • I think deep everyday about the Earth, but this year for Earth Day my challenge is to Plant America by requesting government action on deforestation in America and involving schools in the process of taking one day to plant trees all across this country. The people of Macedonia last year planted six million trees in one day, so I think we can do even more than that in one day. And that is certainly a challenge, especially with a Congress that can't even agree that global warming is even happening.

Good luck with your challenge Leah, and I share your fear.;-) It is admirable that you are willing to face it for a worthy cause.

    • I will continue the quest to "Inspire Action."
Whether it's through an environmental organization dealing with legislation and government leaders, or in you own back yard, thinking globally acting locally. We all need to be a part of the action.
