Why you should be mortified about the Waxman-Markey climate and energy bill | Current_Green

In the video above I outlined key elements of the bill is an extremely over simplified way, and discuss some of the complexities about the political climate.

There are people out there that live and breathe these issues, so if you are on twitter, I highly recommend following @katesheppard and @david_h_roberts. Other people who are consistantly chatty about the topic include @michaeloko who does PR for the NRDC and @JesseJenkins an energy and climate policy analyst.

If you want to hear NPR break down cap and trade, you can smirk as they tried to be funny in this fabulously simplified and understandable piece. Kate Sheppard broke down the waxman markey also known as the aces bill or HR2454 in bullet points (love that). And Dave Roberts just posted a piece on why he’s not freaked out about the Waxman-Markey Bill. This is an excellent article with a lot of great points that will give you hope at the end of the day. And who doesn’t want a little hope at the end of the day?

    • An amendment has been introduced:
Mr. Kucinich submitted the following amendments to the Rules Committee
this morning. He would appreciate the endorsement of your organization
      for any of them.

      1. Sets the quantity of offsets available at a percentage of the cap,
instead of a constant 2 billion tons, which will overwhelm CO2
allowances. The amendment also requires that international offsets come
entirely from sectoral credits after 2017.

      2. Improves offset quality by ensuring they do not cause or contribute
to significant adverse effects on human health, the environment, or the
      sustainable livelihoods of local communities.

      3. Bans all international offsets

      4. Encourages the efficient use of allowances and reduces opportunities
for speculation by reducing the emission value of an allowance by a
      third each year.

      5. Raises the existing federal renewable electricity purchase
      requirement from 7.5% by 2013 to 20% by 2013; 30% by 2020, 50% by 2030;
      and 100% by 2050.

      6. Provides for the installation of solar panels on all federal
government buildings and parking lots that can accommodate 500 kW or
      more of solar photovoltaic panels

      7. Provides for federal procurement of government electric and plug in
hybrid vehicles. By 2016 nearly all federal government cars would be
      electric

      8. Removes trash incinerators from the definition of renewable energy

In addition, he is cosponsor of two DeFazio amendments that would
restore EPA's authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and one to
      control financial speculation.

    • Dear Repower America Member,

In the next day or so, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the boldest effort in our history to rethink how we produce and use energy in this country.

I recorded a video message to describe what's at stake and how we need your help urgently. Take a moment and please watch it.

Some of the smartest ideas on energy and climate -- ones that have been aired by countless hearings in our Capitol over the last two decades -- are finally getting their due in this bill. And it's deserving of our strongest support.

When people said that we couldn't get a bill out of a House committee with a diverse base of support, we proved them wrong. But it wasn't without the work of many people, including members like you.

Today, we need twice that effort. Please watch the video and call your Representative today:

      Thanks for everything,

      Al Gore

    • Dear Repower America Member,

      Call Your Representative:
      877-9-REPOWER
      (877-9-737-6937)

Say "Vote 'yes' on American Clean Energy and Security Act." Then report your call here.

      This is an extraordinary moment.

There are mere days before the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the most unprecedented clean energy and climate legislation in our nation's history. But, our opponents have stepped up a blatant distortion campaign on TV and behind closed doors to scare Congress from taking action.

They know this vote will be close. But, what the special interests have in money and rhetoric, we have in facts and supporters like you.

Let your Representative know that you want a cleaner and stronger economy today. Urge them to support the American Clean Energy and Security Act now.

      Call your Representative: 877-9-REPOWER (877-9-737-6937)

When you call, you will be given talking points and simple instructions to be connected to your Representative. Afterwards, help us coordinate our campaign by reporting your call here.

Just a few days ago, Members of Congress who oppose clean energy paraded around a map that distorts the truth about curbing carbon pollution. Not only was the analysis misleading, the computer file still listed the original author -- the coal lobby.

And another group, funded by the fossil-fuel industry, released targeted TV ads designed to drum up fear ahead of the vote.

We can't let the corporate interests fighting to keep the status quo scare us into sticking to rising fuel costs, more job losses and a continued dependence on foreign oil.

Congress has debated clean energy and the climate crisis for decades. Now is the time to act. Let's make sure the House passes this historic legislation.

Please call your Representative: 877-9-REPOWER (877-9-737-6937)

Thanks for all that you do,

      Steve Bouchard

    • since posting this I received an email from powershift:

"This Friday marks a historic moment in our fight: Congress is set to vote on the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES), a bill that will define the future of our economy, our environment, and our generation. We've been fighting to strengthen this legislation all along the way, and with the vote at the end of the week, we can't let up.

After hearing calls from constituents like you, Representatives Chellie Pingree and Keith Ellison have circulated a letter among their House colleagues calling for ACES to be strengthened. Before this historic vote, we need Members of Congress to hear loud and clear that we, too, demand the strengthening of this bill.

      Call your Representative immediately!

      Find your Congressperson here.
Call 202-224-3121 and ask to be directed to your Representative. When you are connected to your Congressional member's office, ask to speak to a legislative assistant in charge of energy policy.

When you call, here are some talking points you can use:

Ask your Representative to strengthen ACES and stand with the more than 45 members of the House who have signed Representatives Pingree and Ellison's letter. That letter calls for the bill to be strengthened in three key ways:

Holding Polluters Accountable - restore authority to the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate coal plants
Increasing investment in green jobs and in protecting vulnerable communities against the impacts of global warming
      Improving the renewable energy standard

We are in this fight for the long haul. This is one of many times when young people need to stand up for our vision of a clean energy future. We need our voices heard during this historic vote, but when it's over, we won't be able to let up. We need to be there every step of the way, calling for more, whenever the opportunity arises.

Thanks for joining me in this fight,

      Jessy Tolkan
      Executive Director
      Energy Action Coalition

PS - Spread the word: Pass this email along to 10 friends."
