Monsanto is back to force genetically modified wheat down your throat

Excerpt:
Five years after shelving plans for biotech wheat, Monsanto is re-entering the wheat business with the purchase of a Montana seed company.
Creve Coeur-based Monsanto, the biggest seller of genetically modified seed, agreed to pay $45 million for WestBred LLC and could introduce new wheat varieties within a few years. WestBred specializes in wheat germplasm, the seed's genetic material.
The size of the deal isn't significant for a company such as Monsanto, whose annual sales exceed $10 billion. But the company's return to a market it abruptly exited in 2004 is noteworthy, especially at a time when demand for wheat to make breads and pasta is growing.
"Wheat is an important crop and has suffered from a lack of technology investment," said Carl Casale, Monsanto's executive vice president of global strategy of and operations. "Over the last several years, its productivity has fallen behind other row crops like corn and soybeans."
The announcement also comes as Monsanto is looking to its seed business as sales of Roundup herbicide are declining at a faster-than-expected pace because of increased global competition.

MilchMann - Are you kidding me? Don't rely on these movies? I don't rely entirely on them, but they certainly opened my eyes. I am the daughter of a farmer and grew up surrounded by agriculture. It is unnatural that a farmer should not be allowed to replant his own seed - seed that is generated from his previous season of growth. Monsanto genetically modifies seed and turns it into what I call "Attack Seed" and then it attacks an innocent farmer's land from nearby and transforms his formerly natural crop into Monsanto genetically modified crap - yes crap. Then, Monsanto comes around and sues his ass for growing it without having purchased it when they know full well that they actually did it. Let's not even start on the subject of "what the hell are we eating?"
How dare you tell me to not rely on a few films. I would not have known these facts otherwise and it's a truth that every eating person in America should know.
Watch Food, Inc and Fast Food America in their entirety and then get back to me. I've recently become a vegetarian (because of those two movies) who tries to eat only locally grown, seasonal, organic produce and other local products.

Oh dear lord... I hate Monsanto as much if not more than you... before you implied that there were problems with arguments that were made in a previous conversation with someone else, I asked you what they were. I do not disagree with you, the movies are good things... but they only scratch the surface, and are slightly misrepresentational of GMO's as a whole. Monsanto makes absolutely horrible untested GMO's... agreed, they are not the end all and be all of the GMO's though, they have some potential to do good.
Now I will say it again, and I am not attacking you by saying it, we can have a discussion on this if you want, point out what you feel are the flaws and I will explain them to you, if you wish to debate it, you will need to know MORE than what is in the movies.

BIngo csmonut. Sales are down because not as many people are buying it. This "increased global competition" excuse is just backtracking to cover their a^^. They are feeling the pinch and it's about time. This is where we need to hit them. We need to hit the sales of glypohosate across the board and BAN it.

Bull.....people are beginning to understand the ramifications of the poison they are using.
Plus...desertification is taking place in many areas where people once grew lawns.
But I still want to claim it's because the people are slowly waking up. Sounds better. - 2 years ago

John; No problem. I've been wondering why this hasn't been on tv yet, even here on Current to the point where it is featured news on their station or even a Vanguard presentation. I suspect their ties with certain agencies have something to do with it. And no, it isn't what you were doing and is proving to be very dangerous and threatening to our biodiversity and health. So spreading the word as best we can to as many people we can to raise awareness about it is absolutely necessary. Knowledge is power. Thanks for your comments.

I see. thanks for the education. Our experimental people were testing varieties and were crossi breeding whatevers within the same species. Guess we were primitives compared to what you've explained.
Begs an important question: Why isn't or how can the mainstream media be brought in on this? I've been in TV news most my life, and from what you've explained, CBS..et al...don't know the details...even this much. i know 60 Mins. went after Monsanto years back, but can't remember why.
Doubt that Monsanto frightens them, even in this horrible ad environment. Maybe Frontline. many thanks JanforGore for all the work you put into my extension education! Many thanks to everyone. I frankly did not know.

What's wrong with it is the fact that it hasn't been tested. That's not to say this is bad because it isn't natural but rather it could be bad. They have enough money to pay off or buy out anyone who stands in the way of their profit. Wether these unnatural plants are safe to consume or not is none of their concern.

This is not cross breeding and hybridization, and is not done through natural evolution. In the case of Monsanto, they hold poor farmers slaves to contracts not allowing them to save seeds which has been the way of agriculture for centuries and is what preserves biodivesity. These GMOs are made by taking genes and traits from other whole species (spiders, worms, fish, humans) and forcing their insertion via bacteria and viruses into the cell walls of the fruit or vegetable they are trying to invade. And it is an invasion, as the vegetable or fruit cell they are trying to invade (like a human cell) would normally fight off that gene if not for the insertion of the bacteria or virus to weaken it. The fact also that the BT corn is actually registered as a pesticide certainly doesn't make one believe it is safe.
These bacteria and viruses are also not stable. They are volatile and subject to changes along the process (and also in the open environment where differing climates and other factors may work against the process) as well as mutations that can lead to effects on health. BT corn has already killed off much of the traditional corn varieties of Mexico through transgenic contamination. It is a huge problem around the world that can lead to monocrops (read up on Argentina) that should the crop fail would result in a worldwide famine as biodiversity has then been killed off as well through the use of pesticide laced seeds for profit being forced on poor farmers worldwide which they must buy yearly.
This is such a huge issue with many ramifications. There are countless independent studies now being performed all finding that these GMOs are not safe for humans or the environment (with Round Up also being suspected in causing hormonal and cell damage and possibly CCD (colony collapse disorder) which is why doctors and scientists have called for a moratorium on them. If you wish more information this is a good place to start:
http://www.responsibletechnology.org.
Also, look in the Monsanto tag here on Current where you will find numerous articles, studies, and other entries explaining all of the facets of this from patenting of seeds to Monsanto's bullying of organic farmers and their hold on the FDA and USDA which have not been straight forward with the people about what the effects of pushing these organisms into our environment are as well as trying very hard to keep them from being labelled.

I see. When i was in peace corps we grew varieties of corn, for example that had more protean. Then made sure the new varieties were available to our farmers. We in some ways did some of the same things to fight insect...we were developing hybrids...but never in our wildest imaginations went further. I see the problem and why it is upsetting. The video felt pointed and after spending a lot of time in the third world,.a little absurd. Need a little more balance in editing. I know I've angered everyone...but balance is balance on tough issues. thanks though!

Exactly John, balance is essential, these guys tend to kill there arguments with overly biased statements and manipulation of facts.
GMOs are not tested well enough, Monsanto is a horrible company with devastating products and completely unethical business practices... all true
But then they get on shiticks about viruses and gene mutations with fish and microbes and they are over there heads and say assanine things... viruses are no longer used for evasive gene injection... the gene gun was invented... and anything is possible through evolution... if you deny that, you deny your existence, you were once bacteria.
Corn that is a pesticide, very bad, roundup being sprayed on your food, very bad... GMOs on the other hand are not the guilty culprit, they need to be regulated and independently tested before they are commercial but they are not inherently bad. Monsanto is inherently bad, fight Monsanto.

Oh dear god, do not read the words you want to read, did I say that viruses were not used, no, I said they were not used any more because some one said that they use viruses... incorrect, they did use...
You are right, not all people believe in science, just the smarter ones do... please look up IQ and religiosity.
So how are things in your world? Warm and Fuzzy? Because last time I checked corporations hold most of the money and they do not spend it on feeding third world countries, they spend it on investments, so why not get them to spend it on one that can potentially feed third world countries... thinking is not your strong suite is it? While we are on the topic, you should be against farm subsidies, they are good for you and me, but they screw the rest of the world.
Yes, plants that are pesticides is bad, I think I stated that last time, not sure why you are trying to inform me of this, and PCBs like round up cause birth defects, good job, they also cause about 20 other really bad things too, but you got one of them, give your self a pat on the back... but GMO does not implicitly mean herbicide and pesticide, the good things that GMO's could potentially do are not being invested in... fighting against GMO's is the wrong fight, fight against the people who are creating the unethical ones like Monsanto... do you get what I am saying this time?
Oh, and the microbe that was found in soil was not for a "pesticide edge" it was to make RoundUp resistant plants... herbicide and pesticide are different things, one kills plants one kills pests...

JohnSheehan:
believing in god = being religious
Seeing as god is the basis of the big three religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Muslim), and being religious is "of, pertaining to, or concerned with religion"
So yes, believing in god does mean you are religious.
You never previously asked a question about what good things GMO's can do so... not really fair to say that I still have not answered it.
The good things GMO's can do... watch a few Monsanto commercials, they are big on touting all the wonderful things GMO's can do and then they never actually do them...
But before I give you some examples lets clarify that necessary part, they are not necessary, we can let people continue to starve, sure... prudent, absolutely, so people do not starve. Bio-genetic Engineering can make plants more nutritious by absorbing minerals at a rate to which they grow... not sure if you are aware but we have breed plants to grow quickly and they do not contain anywhere near the nutrient they should (fertilizers do not help either), there are naturally occurring pest resistant strains of corn that can be used to make higher yield corns also resistant... this can be done naturally through selective breeding but is proving to take a ridiculous amount of time and can be done quickly with gene impregnation's, you can cross cannabinoids (hemp... non drugs stuff) to make crops not need as much water which helps solve another problem... there are all sorts of things... the list is huge. But as I said earlier you should also be against farm subsidies because that makes it very hard for farmers out side of the US, they can not afford to produce crops because they can not produce at the same cost. It would make food more expensive, but it would allow for more growth (dual meaning there). It should be pretty obvious that our government is not going to stop this any time soon, so...
Oh, and you are right, I am an asshole, but I am an asshole that genuinely cares... if you are curt and quiet no one listens... about 5 minutes of main stream news should prove that point a little to well. I am pretty sure I have gotten my point across with it as well, blindly hating GMO's is not smart, hating people who abuse them and the system like Monsanto... very smart.

You subscribe to a agriculture magazine? I hold a degree in biology!!! Fallow soil has to do with being able to grow the crops in the soil with out fertilizer, after you give them the fertilizer they still do not have level of nutrients even though it subsidizes all of the nutrients the soil is lacking. Does you magazine explain that? No, because I am sure that is not what they said, you read what you wanted to read... again. This is a case in point of why 50% of the country fails reading comprehension tests and the other 50% makes a perfect score...
Watering lawns, bah, irrigating crops in arid regions like north Texas from aquifers is more of a problem... Florida, no shortage of fresh water. Not every where has a water shortage issue, it is a regional thing, deserts like north and central Texas, and southern California... where they grow things and have no water because it is a desert (and the have to divert it or pump dry aquifers)... that is a problem and uses far more water than the watering of lawns.
You are stubborn to a fault, I am sure that is not the first time you have heard that in your life... you should take heed to it and start listening when you only half___ know what you are talking about.
Oh, and the religion thing, you are wrong, I left you an out on that, and you are to blind to have taken it, everyone is religious... atheists... there religious, there religion is believing there is no god... so yes you are religious, along with the other roughly 6.8 billion people on this planet... the religiosity IQ argument was just to stir you up because that is exactly why you threw in the "not every one shares your beliefs" thing... which by the way did not work, I just used it against you, "The best weapon is the one you take from your enemy and use against them"... did you like your own medicine? What I am trying to get at is you need to step out of the box and look around.... and do not try and antagonize others with your personal beliefs, they are just what they say they are, personal.

My gift to Monsanto and any other company thinking of shoving this on us without proper testing or our consent:
NO TO GMOS! STAY OUT OF OUR FIELDS!
Sick of your GM soy
Sick of your BT corn
Sick of your BT cotton
Leaving our environment wornTransgenic contamination and pesticides
Polluting all we see
Your bacteria infested test tube 'food'
Stealing our biodiversityYour 'food' is not the future
You cannot feed the poor
You only bring destruction
To the developing world's doorYou dare to patent seeds
That leave us in debt and strife
You dare to think you have the right
To patent our very life!We will take back our nature
We will take back our land
We will grow and eat the pure food
That we will til by handWe will not give up now
Until our mission is complete
We will not eat your BT corn and soy
And WE WILL NOT EAT YOUR GE WHEAT! - 2 years ago

Previous entry on this.
Farmers on the whole are AGAINST GE/GM wheat as are consumers. However, with governments poised once again to do Monsanto's bidding, we may not have much longer before our entire food system is owned by them.
It's time to stand up to this undemocratic food fascism. I can say this, if they EVER plant a GM wheat field anywhere near where I can get to it I will do what the people in this video did.
