10 Reasons to Shop Local

Choosing greener alternatives is important for sustainability but where you shop in many cases is the most important factor. Shopping locally is important for environmental sustainability as well as economic sustainability. When you shop locally you are supporting members of your own community who are also vested in the heath and success of the community. You are also traveling less and requiring less things to be shipped meaning less carbon, pollution and traffic congestion...

There's flaws in every argument and as I said in an earlier comment the greater convention is too complex to cover in a chart or a list, and the argument is too nuanced for me to get into right now, but the principle of buy local isn't flawed in general. You can present the outliers as arguments against it but I think that shopping locally in conjunction with common sense is the most sensible.

    • Shopping locally eh?
Does that mean the store is local?
The owners of the store live local?
The employees of the store live locally?
The product they sell is grown or make locally?
The parts or raw materials are grown or come from locals?

When push comes to shove its kinda cute to tell people to buy local but in the end it doesn't really mean anything.

This is not true. There are many shades and levels of local and how you define it all depends on where you are and what you are shopping for, but shopping locally on any level isn't an empty fad.

When you go to your local hardware store to buy a hammer rather than jumping on the highway and heading to home depot you are putting money into your local economy, supporting a business that is likey to support your local community and pays local municpal taxes, and you are driving less.

Sure that hammer probably was made in china and that's not great for the environment or the local economy but in the big picture shopping local does make an environmental and economic impact. The breakdown of the value is nuanced but it is there.

    • awesome article....helps people realize that local shopping isn't just because you're anti-establishment or a hyper local snob.
