In case you didn't know, there exists, in the Pacific Ocean, a Texas-sized mass of plastic waste, "basically a soupy mix of plastic-filled seawater that stretches for maybe thousands of miles."
The plastic slowly degrades into smaller pieces, and birds commonly mistake the shiny pieces for food. Numerous bird skeletons have been found on neighboring islands, their "gut contents filled with plastic."
Fish and other sea creatures also eat the plastic, which in turn poses a threat to us humans, because WE EAT THESE POISONED FISH! Apparently, early-onset diabetes and numerous other health problems plaguing Americans for the past 30 years have been linked to plastic and its related chemicals being present in our food. Studies in Japan also show that these chemicals may affect miscarriage rates and other reproductive problems.
If you weren't concerned about the environment yet, are you now?
Should we have more regard for the world we live in, or is the environment less of a priority now that we are in such an economic downfall?
