I give these shoes two thmbs up, I've have tried them while i surf over reefs and rocks and they feel great and protect your feet. Used them hiking and walking up and down rivers and they are awesome, because your feet can grip and mold on whatever your stepping on unlike bulky boots and shoes.... i dont know how peolple compare them to crocs which are like slippers, these are for running/ and in some cases extreme outdoor activities. and its not about fashion either...the are just practical

They are pretty awesome. They take some time to get use to and putting them on might be hard for some people, but they are good. I am wearing my in so I can use them on a cruise.

BTW to be fair to the shoes, its the angle thats really making them look freakish. They dont look quite so sasquatchey when photographed from a normal angle.
Not saying they look better than crocs or anything like that, but they look more normal than the main photo implies ;)

Wow. They look like they won't last more than 20 miles of running... Especially at the rate and all the trails I go through.

I wonder if this is going to be annother earth shoe thing.
Back in the 70s there was this giant fad for "earth shoes'.
they were designed to mimic walking barefoot in sand. One ot the things thy did was have a negative heel because the people noticed that when walking in soft ground the heel sinks deeper. They were a giant lawsuit inducing disaster. People who wore them regularly developed all sorts of joint problems.

Whats cool about these, TSA glances and never ask me to remove them. I don't think the notice they are shoes. Not that it would matter there is nothing to them. Be warned, with heavy use you can destroy a pair in a few months. If you wear Allstars or keds - easy transition.

You can get them from citysports.com for $80-85 (don't know if that helps). They seem to be made of the same material vibram uses in its shoe soles. Very tough and durable, at least the vibram soles on my New Balance 1520 have been. The soles on the fivefingers is hard but thin, you feel everything you walk on (which I like). If you are hard on shoes they will wear down to nothing at the strike points (the ball of your foot) I found a picture of of the damhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/origami_potato/3636487239/in/pool-fivefingers/age i'm speaking of here:

Interesting, not so much the "shoes" those are just weird and are still shoes....but the whole barefoot running thing. I have severe Plantar fasciitis and chronic shin splints and it would seem to me that someone with existing ailments would be damaged by barefoot running but I could be wrong. Im training for some 10ks and half marathons right now and Id like to try the barefoot running thing just to see if it helps, but I dont think I could do it anywhere aside from the beach

Anthropologically (is that a word?) speaking, humans were born to run. We have the heavy leg bones and muscle. Our lung capacity may not be as large as other animals, but we can breathe just fine while running.
I grew up wearing shoes only in school and when my mom made me.
I rediscovered how jogging, with my dog accross the desert where I live, was fun when I wear my old Keds.
No more athletic shoes for me. - 2 years ago

I read a study once that showed most running related injuries came from shoes, and most pro runners run in their bare feet for the best results, this seems similar.
then i googled "barefeet better than shoes"
About the olympics and barefeet: http://neuroanthropology.net/2009/07/26/lose-your-shoes-is-barefoot-better/
related article i found via google: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06157/696125-114.stm

How is this green? It's just an idiotic health fad.
It's all in fun till someone gets fallen arches. Which is what will eventually happen to a lot of these people. Fallen arches is a formerly common problem modern shoes have made rare.
There is a reason we started wearing running shoes in the first place. this is merely an example of us being so coddled by modern technology we have forgotten why it was invented.

i think by your definition shoes are an example of coddling technology, people have been conditioned for decades to wear shoes, indigenous people around the world seem to have no problem running

Good freaking point.
As much as I would love to go barefoot everywhere, I can't walk but for an hour before my arches start aching. People will be pissed once their new "green" toe-sock-shoe-impostors start giving them back problems. - 2 years ago

What did we do? A certain percentage of us, mostly older, eventually got fallen arches. the human body generally didn't last much past forty as a rule. Barefoot now, risk orthopedics in your 60s. Or live in pain like the old people do in the third world. Fallen arches hurt.

a guy at one of my jobs wears those all the time. kinda jealous and want them. it is weird though how they sort of force your toes to separate, your pinky toe doesn't really naturally separate from the rest of your toes and that seems like an uncomfortable idea to me.

an ultra-marathoner friend of mine has recently begun the transition to running barefoot (not even in these shoes, but actually barefoot) and says his feet and shins feel SO much better. He thinks these 5 toe shoes are actually a good transition step between running shoes and actual barefoot running.
