This is one of 4 videos that Ian is sharing with Current TV that documents his trip photographing national parks across the country, as he presents viewers with the good, the bad and the ugly of life as a nature photographer. This video focuses on the Southwest.
Ian's environmental photography has appeared in Time Magazine, on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, National Geographic, Outside Magazine and many other publications. His book, "The National Parks: Our American Landscapes" will be released on August 1, 2009

Never even heard of the petrified forest or the area with the white sands. The white sands looks like some place that should be found in the Middle East or Egypt. Beautiful places.

Entertaining behind-the-scenes look at the life of a photographer. So intriguing to see the story behind each of the photos Ian takes.

It's a good thing Shive left his cushy marketing job to pursue photography... We need more videos like this to introduce different ideas about conservation in the US and share some incredible photography at the same time. Great book on National Parks, too!

A photographer is usually a good storyteller, and a good storyteller creates desire within it's listener, to be a part of the story. Ian and his adventures certainly do this. Our National Parks are in danger of disappearing, the most important aspect of Ian Shive's process, is being able to bring the beauty of nature, and thus the beauty of the parks to people who might not otherwise be able to get to them. Shive's book, along with his video adventures, give the viewer a sense of importance-they can travel with him. They get to experience with him. They now have knowledge. Knowledge of what is disappearing, and what can be saved. If the photographer tells a good story as Ian continues to do, his audience might be convinced to care, and act. And that is what is needed to save our National Parks...and the natural world we live in.

Photography is not merely the result of a fractional shutter-click. Landscape photography in particular, is a culmination - a critical sentence describing a timely, passionate process of seeking, finding, and observing. Part of Ian Shive's process is clearly to BE in nature, to better understand the essence of a place, from the flora and fauna, to land, and climate. Being able to witness this process literally adds a whole new dimension to the photos shown in the book. Its wonderful to see this footage and the personal and un-pretentious commentary from the photograper himself.

yeah, i was also going to mention how unpretentious he was! which seems to be rare among photographers -- he didnt brag about the equipment he used or anything. in fact it seemed pretty minimal. a very respectful reproach will always yield interesting results!
