Ian's environmental photography has appeared in Time Magazine, on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, National Geographic, Outside Magazine and many other publications. His book, "The National Parks: Our American Landscapes" will be released on August 1, 2009

The Rocky Mountains are commonly defined as stretching from the Liard River in British Columbia south to the Rio Grande in New Mexico. Other mountain ranges continue beyond those two rivers, including the Selwyn Range in Yukon, the Brooks Range in Alaska, and the Sierra Madre in Mexico, but those are not part of the Rockies, though they are part of the American cordillera.

A diverse variety of wildlife inhabits this northeastern mountain landscape. The area provides high quality habitat for moose, elk, stone sheep and mountain goat. The abundance of prey supports predator species such as wolves and grizzly and black bears. Other important wildlife includes furbearers such as marten, fisher, weasels and wolverines. Information on small mammals, amphibians, birds, invertebrates and reptiles is relatively unknown. Lake trout, rainbow trout, bull trout, arctic grayling and lake whitefish are some of the important sport fish species in the Northern Rocky Mountains Park.

The region’s backbone is a mighty series of batholiths—huge masses of molten rock that slowly cooled below the surface and were later uplifted. The batholiths are eroded into rugged granitic ranges.

The Northern Rockies contain the most varied mountain landscapes of the Cordillera, reflecting a corresponding geologic complexity. The region’s backbone is a mighty series of batholiths—huge masses of molten rock that slowly cooled below the surface and were later uplifted. The batholiths are eroded into rugged granitic ranges.

I spent a summer working around Steamboat Springs cutting ski trails. Best way to enjoy the Rockies is to stay for an extended period of time. 8 hours a day of hard work and the beauty of the rocky mountains made the time fly.

I go to Glacier National Park quite often and everytime I go is equally as beautiful as the last. Every trip is filled with amazing sights no matter where you are and he captures this beauty I think, but nothing's like experiencing for yourself.

Cool video. Im on a road trip right now through the Rockies. However, last time i checked, many glaciers melt in the summer. Because the continent gets warmer.

i really appreciated his view on exploration... very thought provoking! And to add to it... just because everything is mapped out, doesn't mean every one has seen it. there is still something amazingly special about waking up before sunrise and sitting silently waiting for it to illuminate a mountain peak or a small bubbling creek, etc.
great pod, thanks for sharing! - 2 years ago

I've worked with Ian on several projects for our magazine, National Parks, and it's great to see him out there with a camera in hand, explaining his process and his passions. The book is amazing--if it doesn't inspire you to get out and see more of our natural world, then nothing will.

"Being in a place like the park changes your tone and your whole outlook in a way that opens you up to more possibilities, more creative experience."
As both an artist and avid nature-lover/observer, I completely relate to this. Nature is the ultimate inspiration, and its wonderful to see an artist at work; you can see how passionate he is, and as much in awe of the beauty of these places as we are. People who haven't been to these areas yet will be inspired, and those who have will be pleased to see somebody who has shared a similar experience.

Seeing Ian at work in the wild is just a window into what he goes through to get the gorgeous images you see on the pages of his book. The book is fabulous in that it's truly about the images-they are a perfect example of how the essence of a place can be captured with the right light, the right spirit, and the right attitude. Get yourself a copy, it will make you want to visit the places he does, yourself.
