We Don't Need More Dirty Coal!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists

Coal-fired power plants are the largest source of global warming pollution in the United States – yet right now, our country is poised to increase these emissions by building many new dirty coal plants.

Virtually all of these proposed, new coal plants lack carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, which aims to capture a plant's carbon emissions and store it underground. Building more plants without CCS would lock us into decades of rising carbon emissions at a time when we must rein in global warming pollution.

We already have renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies readily available that can meet our country's near-term energy needs. Please urge Congress to oppose the construction of new coal-fired power plants unless they feature CCS technology.

    • I hope you all are ready to extend unemployment benefits, and find housing for the thousands that will lose their jobs if we shut down all the coal mines. You neglect to look at the human costs. "Consol Energy Blacksville #2 Mine and Prep Plant, midnight shift, will work as scheduled. Blacksville #2, will work as scheduled." I hear this each evening on WWVA, and it tells me that thousands upon thousands of coal miners are going to their jobs, supporting the American economy, supporting their families. And yet, many of you don't care if they were to lose their career, lose their homes, lose their savings, etc. What do you propose to replace coal with- windmills? more nuclear power plants? Sometimes, you have to THINK, rather than just spout off about "Green" energy........

"Hey!!! What is wrong with you? We are not saying to removed those employees to the company but to show how dangerous a company is!!!

Look at me, i am a victim of a sabotage inside the Coal-fired Power Plant and they abused me using drugs....they want me dead because i found the truth that there is a missing fund and Owners Equity even money in the bank.

Not only that, the sea water was been contaminated with new types of bacteria and virus even fungus that affects the skin of those who swum in the sea because that was near the resort.

Besides, even the fish in the sea was been contaminated with toxins that affects the health of those who ate them."-Donabell C. De Apera

    • "Excuse me? If that so, i want to introduce Quezon Power (Phils.) Inc. located in Brgy. Cagsiay I Mauban, Quezon where my biggest project against thieves and saboteurs are. The tremendous effect even in the sea water that causes skin allergies and infections even in the internal organs...

OOOOPPPPPSSSSSssssss..... I am not yet finished, will you imagine that www.bechtel.com gone a US$10,000,000.00 (Ten Million US Dollar) profit and Owner's Equity due to those saboteurs and thieves?

Besides, i love to tell to the whole world that even politicians wants to kill me because i found out that they are one of them who stole that money inside the company."-Donabell C. De Apera

    • we have much better ways to generate power now... coal plants are a thing of the past. lets move on and evolve people. there is no reason what-so-ever to keep building power plants anymore, we have much better ways now.

You're right, there are alternatives. However, the alternatives are expensive and offer their own problems. Coal facilities are cheaper compared to the alternatives, and we (US) have huge deposits of coal. With super critical facilities and CCS tech we can do a lot to reduce emissions.

I think that there's one more option people don't talk about ---- USE LESS POWER. I think we all need to take a step back and personally make sacrifices to reduce our use of fossil fuels. A majority of the population won't do anything because it requires the output of personal energy vs. waiting for a solution (one they will be happy to bash) offered up by someone.

use less power... yeah there's an idea... instead of using 50 year old transistors, powerlines, and such we should be upgrading everything... even the wire we have now is better, all I mean is that we shouldn't keep building these antiquanted labor and material taxing generators when we have better everything, materials and methods. we need to make the initial investment in better technologies instead of bailing out fuck up bankers and auto makers. then we can have this talk again in another fifty years when we've got even better things... just a thought.

    • What's with this 'dirty coal' business? I feel like we're being set up as a 'clean coal' supporter. We should let it be known that we are against burning coal period (if you are, of course)! The truth is, no matter where the emissions are stored they are STOred, not done away with. Beyond anything else, burning coal is still relying on a nonrenewable resource!
