Cash for clunkers actually bad?

Ok, so the government has taken an indirect approach to propping up the ailing US auto industry with its $3billion cash for clunkers program. Seems good and legit on the surface, right? Now, what if I told you that all that money and time and all those cars was kind of a waste? Each car that is traded in during this program is being either crushed or disabled. Engines are being seized on purpose so they cannot be reused. Perfectly roadworthy cars are being crushed.

My suggestion is, rather than disabling, dismantling or crushing perfectly good cars, sell them to other countries, or the people in those countries, that cannot afford new cars. Any other ideas of what could be done with the "clunkers?"

    • It does seem like something more constructive could be done with the 'clunkers'. It took time, energy, and material to make them in the first place.

    • this is what happens when you let stupid people run the country. 4500 dollars for a car that only gets 2 more miles per gallon(ford commercial) what about the carbon it took to create that car in the first place. goodbye America it was nice knowing ya !

    • C4C is probably a bad idea. A lot of people are using it to buy foreign cars. It is eliminating billions of dollars worth of used cars that many people that cannot afford to buy new rely on. It has the potential to take away work for auto shops that may have kept these "clunkers" on the road for many more years. And last, but not least, it is encouraging people in this country to ask for and take on more debt which is what got us in trouble in the first place. It may be a done with the best intentions but I do not think they should continue it.
