NYC Bike Helmet By Yves Behar is Latest Green Fashion Accessory

I know, you don't need a bike helmet in Copenhagen or Amsterdam, (and no, I don't think they should be mandatory any more) but some people think you do in New York City, so the City itself got in the game by commissioning Yves Behar's Fuseproject to design one that "that appeals to the new generation of bikers, would provide safety both in a context of a free bike program, and of a policy to promote cycling in the City."

    • Locutus,

"Green has become code for eco-poseur," is a classic. Reminds me of Madison Avenue co-opting the peace movement and today the trendiest boutiques still sell tie dyes!

    • Yeah...it feels like it's trying to hard to be cool, but t hey di take their cool factor seriously in NYC.

@locutus RE: ""Green" has become code for "eco-poseur":

I agree that the term has become complex and abused in the market place. But I also think that for now, it gives people common ground to speak and work in the sustainability movement. In a perfect world, we wouldn't have to have a word that describes the shift in consciousness to how we relate to resources and our natural world..but until then: I for one am happy to have a word that creates an entry point.

    • I know some people still reluctant to use a helmet but let me tell you, some time ago if I did not had one my head would split in half when I was stroked by a car doing a wrong turn. So think about it!

    • Why does it have to be millitary green? It isn't a very practical sort of helmet at all. If you're riding long enough to need sun protection, won't you need ventillation, too?

Indeed. It looks a lot like the PASGT helmets I was issued in the military. Imagine a camouflage cover to complete the look (...although the neck flap is kind of clever).

    • This kind of crap is demeaning, and reduces "green" to a trendy, superficial fashion statement.

"Green" has become code for "eco-poseur", No doubt after an afternoon of riding, the clowns wearing the tre chic "green" helmet will throw the bikes on the back of the gas guzzling SUV, smug while they sip lattes from Starbucks, patting themselves on the back for remembering to recycle their trash.

      FAIL

    • I still believe that they should just make Judo mandatory. A few simple falling principles is really all you need, a helmet should only be a back up. I'm also not sure OD is a good color for civilian cyclists, it doesn't have night visibility. Night visibility to drivers is vital in my book, I've had way too many near collisions because my white shirt and reflectors weren't reflective enough. :/ The neck-shade is a good addition though, trekking several miles does tend to get you sun burnt.
