What our world needs a lot more of now more than ever is creative ideas on how to implement enduring social change in our communities. This one, launched by Connecticut's Project M at Winterhouse, put an interesting twist on the old "carrot dangling from a stick" trick in an effort to spread awareness regarding organic, locally grown produce. Once you read the article, please share your thoughts on whether you think this idea could be implemented in your community with equal success. What additional ways can you think of getting people to make more conscious and responsible consumer choices?

    • You might want to look at small regional markets like New Leaf in the Santa Cruz area to see how they are solving this problem. They work hand in glove with local growers to get their produce into New Leaf stores — and promote locally grown as the best first choice.

    • The major problem with local farming is transportation. Local pizza sounds like a good start. We need some not-for-profit group to assist local farmers get their product to the public. Food co-ops are springing up all over America but getting locally produced products to market is the challenge there also. Maybe we need the horse and buggy back again but with a "ice-box" wagon. Any serious thoughts or suggestions. Have any communities solved the transport problem?
