The Futility Economy

Author, Commentator, and l'enfant terrible of the New Urbanism movement, James Howard Kunstler, welcomes the New Year with a dispatch titled "The Futility Economy" from his Blog Clusterfuck Nation.

This post builds upon the author's extensive previous observations on the state of the nation. Namely, that we face grave threats not just from climate change, but other issues such as natural resource depletion (i.e. oil, water). He further illustrates that our physical infrastructure and the way we live (auto-centric, consumerism) perhaps is the strongest driving factor behind our path to ruin.

It's not an easy message to swallow, even Kunstler notes, but it is perhaps useful to keep in mind as even the latest activism over the environment may simply amount to "green" band-aids unless we consider the deeper, driving forces behind the many issues we face as a nation and a planet.
