Viruses and bacteria are probably responsible for many portions of our DNA. We've been co-evolving with them for millions of years... so why not? In many cases it's not beneficial for a virus to kill us. Some of them need us to survive... So why don't some of them just hide in us for generations? Simply put... you are a genetic library that is MUCH more complex than we fully understand. More at the link!
