Texas breaks wind - The U.S. wind energy generation record, that is

Last Friday, the Lone Start State broke wind – the US wind power generation record, that is (sorry, I just couldn’t resist), by producing 19% of the state’s total electricity mix. They broke their own record from the previous year by 12.8% – more than tripling their wind power production in a year.

The country’s leader in wind power, Texas could easily produce more than the current fifth of their overall electricity from wind turbines. The only problem is their lack of transmission lines that could take that energy to bigger cities who need it the most. The solution? Investing $5 billion to create new transmission lines in the next few years to be able to harvest more power from West Texas, which produces 89% of their total amount of wind energy. These new lines will then be able to help supply electricity to big cities like Houston and Dallas.

Wouldn’t it be great if Texas were some day known for its wind power rather than its oil?
