The GM food debate: why meddle with genes at all?

Plants that kill insects. Corn that thrives even after being sprayed with chemicals that kill any ordinary plant. Plants that grow faster, higher and stronger. We can make them all by taking genetic material from one life form and splicing it into another. The pressure to feed the world is immense. The profits to be made are equally huge.
