Kristian Gustavson and Jared Criscuolo are the founders of the California nonprofit group Below the Surface - A Coast to Coast Exploration of America's Waterways. In the midst of winter, these two modern day explorers sought out to explore the largest river swamp in the conterminous U.S. by canoe. The guide for the Expedition was legendary river man John Ruskey, the guide from Quapaw Canoe Company in Clarksdale, MS. In a 30 ft. cypress canoe named the "Junebug" hand hewn by the riverman. With the guidance of Mr. Ruskey, the crew of a writer, photographer, professional surfer, and biologists from the Audubon Society safely navigated one of America's "most treacherous rivers". Kristian took on the river with the "Mean Green", a Stand Up Paddle board donated by professional surfer Jodie Nelson.
The exploration began at the Old River Control Structure, where the Mississippi is held back by tons of cement in a glorious balancing act between architecture and nature. The water dives deep below the structure creating a swirling maelstrom on the outflow side of the dam. Large timber swirls like a toothpick in a toilet bowl and the massive expanse of the river and the sheer volume of water is enough to make one think twice before entering the river.
