This one very sad story, I have a 12 year old boy who is diving with Scuba Rangers and a 7 year old girl who cant wait to get in the water with a tank rather than a snorkel and if this continues there is no hope for any of our children seeing sharks in the their natural environment.

in the name of education and awareness, can one of you contact a public library in the area and see if they will accept a donation of this book?

We will cover all costs to send it in if they'll list the book.It covers the story of shark fin soup, one of the biggest reasons for the decimation of this species and recently laucnhed in Hong Kong, the biggest market for shark fins. - 1 year ago

Maybe marinas and "sport fishermen" should go in for trophy photographs instead. You make more money out of a live shark than a dead shark and it's better for the oceans.

Captain Krohn said today, "it was a trophy catch, so everything is fine...". He then said the trophy was for a 16 year old boy.
These kids need education by experience. Let's take the boy diving with hammerheads, and then ask him what he'd rather have as a trophy...a dead shark?...or the incredible experience of being in the water with one?
Let's start teaching! - 1 year ago

This is so sad and these animals are endangered! To many of us, this is like killing your pets! Our world needs more education on shark conservation and the need for sharks in our oceans! One day stupid and uneducated will figure it out but will it be too late?

Do wish people would have better respect for and understanding of the real world that is around them. I mean for the oceans, forests, mountains etc... We must take responsibility for our actions and think about the repercussions that will follow. Sad that most people are self-centered to the point, they only care about what is within their small bubble, and will get upset when their comfort zone is challenged. Even if the source is something they did or contributed to.

Knowledge leads to Understanding and will turn fear into fascination. We need to educate the public about the important role sharks play in the ocean. Without sharks there won't be a healthy ocean and without a healthy ocean we cannot live, because that's where most of our oxygen comes from.

I am sick of these ignorant people taking nature for granted and treated animals this way--especially sharks, who've been around for millions of years and are on the brink of extinction. There is nothing "sporty" about sport fishing. Nothing. There is nothing but pain, cruelty and waste of a life that wanted to live as much as the human, all for greed or vanity. I'm a vegan and don't eat any animals, but I consider sport fishing and especially "trophy" hunting to be a particularly cowardly form of entertainment. It's sad that these activities make these losers actually feel like they've accomplished something.

Here's the thing about CITES vs the IUCN Red List: This past March in Qatar "The hammerhead proposal was defeated in a vote of 75 in favor, 45 opposed and 14 abstentions. Votes were done by secret ballot. A two-thirds majority is needed for the adoption of a proposal."

I read an interview with a marine biology prof. in Florida who said that many Hammerhead sharks tend to die after release due to overexertion from fighting the line.
I do not see how Florida Fish & Wildlife can allow people to take Hammerhead sharks if they've been listed as endangered with CITES...

Frankly I do not believe in sport fishing. What the heck sport is it to catch a beautiful creature of the sea? Even if you do release it it has had damage done to it and it could perish anyway. I am also leery of any sport fisherman speaking for the saving of any fish species. I do not think catching such beautiful creatures is a sport! Go play baseball for crying out loud. Stop killing!

We are fishing out our oceans so frankly I don't like any fishing.Blue Fin Tuna is going to disappear then what, it goes on and on. You can't keep killing one species without damage to yet another. Do we only pay attention when it is to LATE?? Tell me please just how Florida plans to enforce the law of eating what you catch! That is just plain stupid and I am not one to be fooled by such lame laws!

Don't you think all shark fishing and sport fishing/hunting issues should be started in classes? ..Even if parents could talk and explain these issues on a volunteer basis..

This is George from the Shark Task Force. Thank you for your support on this. I've talked with FWC. Florida does not consider the Scalloped Hammerhead endangered - even though it's globally listed on the IUCN Red List as endangered. We are pushing for that to change - so all the support we get on this story - will be taken to state officials and used to support the cause: thoughtful, sustainable fisheries for generations - not brutal waste. Thank you again.

What marina is this?
Marinas should take some responsibility for protecting these animals by letting their patrons know that caught sharks are NOT allowed on their docks.
Everyone should promote the Shark-Free Marina initiative to marinas in their area. Including this marina where this happened.

Since the name of the vessel and it's captain is known, could we not start and publish a list of offenders? Maybe when their bottom line is diminished they will get the point that not only we should not aid in the extinction of such majestic animals, but that they can bring more financial rewards alive (as a tourist attraction) than dead? The nearsightedness and greed of most never ceases to amaze me.

Scalloped hammerhead sharks are included in the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and listed as "Endangered". The status given to these sharks is a result of over-fishing and the demand for their fins.
Males reach sexual maturity when they are 10 years old, the females only after 15-16 years and only 15-30 puppies are born after a gestation of a whole year! After giving birth, a mother Scalloped Hammerhead needs to take a year off between pregnancies to re-build her energy stores.
I hope this clarifies why this is truly a scandalous waiste! These sharks are essential to maintain a healthy ecosystem in the oceans. They regulate the species below them, and ensure healthy gene pools as they feed on the old, and sick fish.
When sharks are gone from the oceans, it will have an effect on all species in the sea, right down to the phytoplankton. This phytoplankton provides 70% of the oxigen that we breath.
The ocean and the animals in it are our lifeline. Destroying it means destroying ourselves!

For everyone who watches this video, please also post your thoughts here. When enough well mannered and honest public reaction results from such a needless act then potentially people who can make a difference can be urged into doing so. I'm talking about the law makers, law enforcement and other decent folk who can act to make sure it doesn't happen again. Cheers, Mark.
