It has taken years, but finally Australia has a pineapple it can call its own.
Up until now the pineapples Australians have eaten have been derived from those brought in from overseas.
But now Australian scientists have bred the first true blue Australian pineapple, with twice as much vitamin C as regular varieties.
Garth Sanewski, a horticulturalist with the Queensland Department of Innovation, led a 15-year project to breed the super-fruit.
"We've used conventional cross pollination ... so we use pollen from one favoured variety and fertilise with another favoured variety to produce seed, plant those out and pick out the best of those - no genetic modification whatsoever," he said.
The new variety is known as Australian Jubilee.

Thought some good news in crop development was in order. This was done in "traditional" ways by cross-pollination. Looks great and has more Vitamin C.
Now we can all visit Eden and have some fantastic umbrella drinks in celebration.
There must be some variation on the Pina Colada in the works. Long overdue, I'd say. - 1 year ago
