Good for the dog, good for the students, good for the inmates.
Great story, thanks for posting.
BTW---it is not hard to teach dogs hand signals---body language is their primary means of communication, it comes to them much more easily than voice communication.
Sparky will be great with the children.
I had a Weimaraner rescue once who had severe ear infections, and was left mostly deaf after operations on her ears for the infections. It took time, but she finally recovered and it came time to adopt her out. I was holding back for just the right person.
Then I got a call from a lady in Oregon who had a son with multiple problems including autism, downs and other medical problems. His service dog had died, and they could not find a suitable replacement. Due to his medical problems, her son would have frequent losses of behavior control(tantrums)---and the sudden outbursts of screaming and yelling would upset all the dogs she had looked at. Penny Lane, being almost completely deaf was not phased in the least by the tantrums. Penny Lane became a great service dog, and saved her masters life several times due to her vigilance in watching him and alerting his mother when he stopped breathing on several occassions.
Penny Lane was an outstanding service dog BECAUSE she was deaf.
