A belated Christmas present for Tommy and Mary - and all the other chimps who still need our help

The first time I remember “meeting” a chimp was when Tommy and Mary, two chimpanzees in the Detroit Zoo chimp show, were our guests for Christmas. Five years later, they became two nameless research subjects with numbers tattooed on their chests.

As a belated Christmas present to Tommy and Mary, and to the thousands of captive chimpanzees who still need our help, can we make 2012 the Year of the Chimpanzee, in deed if not in name?

This coming year, at long last, can Congress vote on the Great Ape Protection Act?
