I live in downtown LA and aboslutely loving it...Wish I can buy something around here, but prices are what else but insane...one bedroom they're selling for 560 K in my building so you go figure...I don't know, I guess it is all a sole percepection, seriously...I lived in Chicago and hated it..great city but hated it...LA does seems to be almost nonfunctional from time to time but I feel like a fish in a water tank, so...quite functional...hahaha...but, hands to god, so many varieties in this city like no other place...and if they tell you, there is no fresh air, whatever...go any place, San Pedro, North Glandale, Canoga... the greatest place in the world...

Great article!
Even from a Frenchy who loves walking the streets of Paris.... I have to say that somehow I love living here in LA. - 4 years ago

As a native Angeleno, I've often given transplants this piece of advise:
LA is comedy, but you have to get the joke. If not, you ARE the joke.
And still sometimes, it's just not funny...

I can only live in Los Angeles because I was raised here. It's my default hometown. But it doesn't feel like a functional city.
I think most of it has to do with it's expanse. I drove forty miles this weekend to meet some friends at a bar in Santa Monica.
Distance makes life difficult. Last night I was able to take the subway to a music festival downtown. The vibe was similar to Love Fest in San Francisco. But, after Love Fest I walked with people I'd just met to a nearby apartment. In Los Angeles that kind of spontaneity doesn't occur because everybody lives so far away from each other.
I'd rather live in: New York, Mexico City, or Buenos Aires.
But I guess it makes the most sense to live here now.
(specifically because my parents don't charge me rent.)

What I found interesting about his ode to LA, is that it could equally be a description of hell to many people.
As someone who's been living in San Francisco for little over a year, I found Steve's comments about the city (scroll down to the 7th comment of the blog) super interesting.
He says, "I'm sick to death of ambitious people moving to San Francisco and complaining the whole time about how it's not L.A. or New York."
I admit that I too spent most of my first months here wishing I could move elsewhere. Many people say SF is a city that lacks soul. I disagree. You just have to give it some time. Soon, you'll be comparing all other cities to San Francisco.

I love LA more than I probably should. It borders on stalkerish.
