Cheap Housing

The current global community continues to struggle with issues such as energy conservation, poverty, and declining economies. There are countless ways of battling these topics. However, action is just as, if not more, important than simply brainstorming ideas and concepts. My Abod is an initiative to provide the homless and povershed a home. Based from the design firm BSB Design, My Abod provides a "home in a box." Through mass production and cheap, sustainable materials, the price of a house is roughly $1500. It can be constructed in a day with a crew of four. The construction is very basic and only requires a screwdriver and an awl which are included in the box. These homes have already been implamented, though not extensively, in Africa. It is these types of designing and initiative that brings the world together as a better place.

    • Simple and toughtful - two things the powers that be - globally - can't get their head around. I grew up in Papua New Guinea and the Donga was standard issue, and as a matter of fact one of our (Australia's) more famous architects, Glen Murcutt, actually was raised in similar housing, important beginings, I say. I hope you and your team get some deserved respect and acolades.

    • I like the idea of affordable housing but the only thing that needs to be watched out for is mass production. As long as the modules can be modified/personalised and extended as families extend and grow then it is a great idea.
