Kehinde Wiley

Hip-hop and art history collide on Kehinde Wiley's canvases, where contemporary urban black men pose as angels, prophets, and saints set against richly colored swirls of ornate and rococo ornamentation.

    • I just recently saw his work. It's amazing. First the color combinations really draw you in and make you wonder how the subjects belong. It's confusing and sexy at the same time.

    • This mans art is simply remarkable! He is much like John John Jesse in his iconogrphy of the punk scene where Wiley does the same thing with hip hop icons. Really the only difference between the two is that Wiley refers to other works of art to place his icons. Wiley does this with great success which adds to the uniqueness of his work. Great artist.

    • since viewing this pod on television earlier this year, i have become slightly obsessed with kehinde wiley. his process is fascinating; incorporating model perspective to draw a sharp contrast between classical and contemporary. there is SO much power in his work and raises many an interesting question about black masculinity in art, challenging perceptions of race, gender and urban culture. if only i had $25k to buy a painting...

    • What a fascinating concept. You really do a great job of not only shooting, but structuring this pod. We get a great deal of information in subtle ways that lends to greater understanding. Also, the fact that he is so talented and articulate makes it even stronger.

    • i read about kehinde a while ago in complex magazine.

he does things with art that i have only seen in other painters, such as hyper-realist mike thompson.

the man does what no other artist has done, with a mix of hip-hop and past classic pieces.

he will be revered, centuries after he's gone, no question.

    • To see this revolutionary art is both inspiring, and a big therapeutic! Glad (and suprised) to see that his work has actually made it into public. His gallery is great. Can't wait to go to the exhibit in Ft. Worth, TX.

    • I don't know how to articulate my acclaim without sounding like an art snob...juxtaposition, classical vs. contemporary... blah blah blah.. but damn what an incredible artist. Time capsule material for sure. Great pod!
