Newark Art Supply

mavenfly
Ade Tugbiyele Sedita and her husband, Chris Sedita, opened Newark's first art supply store in 10 years to great fanfare and community support, including Mayor Cory Booker. Even more monumental is that it launched in three months, October to January -- from concept to opening.

This is my first pod, so thank you for viewing and your support. Comments [constructive & complimentary] are greatly appreciated!

    • Beautiful. As a native Brooklynite and NYC tour guide, I have a terrible habit of putting down NJ due to stereotypes and elitism. I should know better. this pod shows that its time for this to stop. I PRAY that this "rennaissance" is very true. I would LOVE to see more proof of this

    • Very well done pod! I lived in S, Orange in the early 1980's and went to church in Newark. I'm excited about your participation in the latest Newark renaissance and wish you all the best as your community grows.

    • good and important subject matter.
I really liked the way Ade, the main character in this piece acted as narrator and tied the whole piece together throughout.

    • very nice positive piece...nothing conflicting, just warm, positive piece. I wouldn't have put the address at the end it makes it a little commercial...however it doesn't really distract. good job...

    • Talk more and show what the decline of not having art in thier community looks like. For example, what does the neighborhood look like, how do the people feel about the lack of art in the community and some of the work shops she has organized.

    • Nicely done. I thought the interview with Mrs. Sedita was really fascinating, and she was a great subject for the piece. It was also well edited, and I loved the choice of music.

Two criticisms... First, I thought it was a bit text heavy. The interview ran throughout the entire piece, and the work needed some time to breathe. I guess I wanted more observational scenes around the store (i.e. people shopping, interacting, and not talking to the camera) without V.O. interview. I think having these scenes play out in between the snippets of interview would even help give a better sense of the space of the art supply store itself. Second, I wanted a bit more background on Newark as a city. Having grown up in NJ, I know a fair amount (and it was great to see mayor Cory Booker in the piece!!), but I feel like it might be a bit confusing to someone not familiar with the place. Maybe just one title card toward the beginning would do the trick?

Other than those two very small criticisms, I loved it. GL for sure!

    • Ade's interview is heartfelt and she has an inviting attitude. However, in my opinion, it's important to incorporate what the store actually retails to their community. I felt the store itself was overlooked for the mostpart.

    • It was a great piece about a local store aiming to provide a focal point in the community, I just felt that there was a bit too much focus on Ade and she wasn't the most entertaining of main characters - maybe interviews with some other workers/customers to provide their story would have been interesting as well.
But definitely gave me a warm feeling at the end!

    • So I just watched DJ Ralph McDaniels interview Fab 5 Freddy, Fab 5 said his first music video was low budget yet he still got air time. Reach out to them on myspace and stay on the stick! I'm from your area, not that I'm proud of this, yet I once hustled at "Big Shield's" I'm on the DL later. Also I'm thinking either NYE TV ch 31 , or NYC TV ch 25 in the Tri-State area, are looking for amateur pods to fill some of their time slots, check it out. With Love; akela_p501usa a.k.a. • Hey everyone -- thanks for the feedback! This is my first edit for a class assignment to do an interview, so I distilled it down to one voice for a short piece. With all of the positive support, I will definitely expand the edit for this pod to include the voices of her husband, artists and members of the community who were also present for the opening. No problem. I shot three hours of footage that day -- doing camera and sound solo!

    • I love art stores! I think this is a great piece demonstrating how businesses can be so much more than just a commercial enterprise. As an artist in Binghamton, NY, I'm well aware of the importance of art in a struggling city. It would be interesting to do a followup piece in 3-4 months to see how things are going. GL

    • A word of advice & a GL for your pod.
Make sure that the Mayor of your city (unlike ours in NYC) who welshed on his promise to me in a published 2004 newspaper article to fund art in our public school system) provides needed funds for art education in your city. Good luck.
