If society could openly embrace feminine beauty - such as the nude female form rather than make it taboo, we might not have as high a rate of rape and other sex offenses against women.
In addition, how does such a prudish position affect a developing young women or a mature women for that matter? It can't be good.
When a society tries to suppress natural human instincts and behavior, those instincts and behavior inevitably manifest themselves in an unnatural way.
And besides, an abundance of women and sexual interaction makes men less combative - so I've read (here on Current) and would agree with - based upon observation of course.

re: uroborus8 - I blame the Bible. Adam and Eve learn how to cover up. Then there's that weird story in Genesis 9 where Noah's all drunk and naked. The Bible is full of blood and guts, but as soon as someone disrobes, poop's gonna hit the fan!
The same is true of US television.

I think it is a gorgeous piece. The more people censor nudity, the more vulgur nudity becomes. It's not like she is a prostitute, she is art! Nudity is not something to be ashamed of. I agree that actual nudity has it's place, but nudity always has a place in art. And this piece is a lovely way to view a body, very nice influence.

I agree with Phiily's first comment that MINORITY RULES...
We are ruled by MINORITIES and I am not talking about people from south of the border or Asia, I am talking about the minority groups such as was given in this example here.
I think the phrase "Oligarchy of Greed" comes to mind.

Why are humans so prude about nudity? Nudity is our only common denominator.

remember the good ol' days when U.S. citizens would roll their eyes and shake their heads when our european friends would ask us if clothing nekkid statues was what an attorney general was really for?

That Venus is such a harlot. I have never seen her in actual clothes, not even once.
Sarcasm aside, I'm not *so* upset with the decision. Any kid walking by with a Sharpie could hardly restrain himself, and you know it.

how is it possible to ban a painting from 500yrs ago...one would think that because of the history behind the picture it would garner more love because of its antiquity...yet again some person with repressed sexual problems making laws....

She is kind of covering her 'modesty,' just with a see through scarf...
Or maybe the artist had X-ray googles on...
Kind of ridiculous conclusions you come to when decisions like this are made, art should be celebrated and promoted when it can be put in a place like this, think of the amount of people who would see, and maybe even appreciate, art been around tube stations. Better than chewing gum covered billboards.

One is forced to wonder how a culture can openly TOLERATE killing ten of thousands of innocent IRAQI's in an illegal war, but NOT tolerate the beauty of the female form?

what would be the difference if you saw this painting in an art museum? Its art!! Nothing more. There have been thousands of naked statues and paintings over hundreds of years...it wasn't seen as racy back then, but the appreciation of the female body. It seems insane for this work of art to banned!

Minority rules. The fact that MOST people won't be offended doesn't seem to matter, it's only because a minority MIGHT be offended that it gets banned.
What a strange decision.
