Think of embroidery and you picture your gran, shawl over her knees, rocking in her rocking chair indulging in a spot of needlework, well not after you've checked out some of the pieces from a new 'Extreme Embroidery' collection at a New York museum.

The collection invited 48 stitch-up artists demonstrate the diversity of new approaches to needleworking techniques, and they certainly succeeded, check out some of the pieces below and let us know if you think your gran would be impressed with any of the extreme embroidery...

    • Love it! I am also a stitch-up artist and in my latest artwork project I had to represent two dimensional distinct spaces. I used the "stitch technic" to do that. I "love" the appearance, texture and dramatic feelings that it brings to view.

    • Xiang Yang, The Truth that People Are Not Willing To Face -- Bushism vs Saddamism

The Truth that People Are Not Willing To Face -- Bushism vs Saddamism are portraits of President Bush and Saddam Hussein linked by a rainbow of threads. The threads are continuous between the 2 images, giving the impression that the faces have morphed into one another.

    • Andrea Dezsö, Lessons From My Mother

A rather controversial collection of aphorisms and warnings received from her Transylvania mother, examples of the series:

My mother claimed that a woman's legs are so strong that no man can spread them if she doesn'tlet him",

"My mother claimed that you can get hepatitis from a handshake,"
