Women can`t afford to get angry

Yale University psychologist Victoria Brescoll along with Eric Uhlmann at Northwestern University recently completed three separate studies to explore a phenomenon – where people accept men’s angry behaviour but look at angry women as less competent.
The three studies provide women with recommendations for navigating emotional hazards of the workplace.
Brescoll said that paying emotionally neutral pays and, if you can`t, at least explain what ticked you off in the first place.
“An angry woman loses status, no matter what her position,“ said Brescoll, who worked in Clinton`s office as a Congressional Fellow in 2004 while she was preparing her doctoral thesis on gender bias.
She noticed over the years that women pay a clear price for showing anger and men don`t.
In all the three studies, both men and women were shown videos of actors portraying men and women who were ostensibly applying for a job. The participants in the studies were then asked to rate applicants on how much responsibility they should be given, their perceived competence, whether they should be hired, and how much they should get paid.
In the end, both men and women reached the same conclusions: angry men deserved more status, a higher salary, and were expected to be better at the job than angry women.
When those actor/applicants expressed sadness, however, the bias was less evident, and women applicants were ranked equally to men in status and competence, but not in salary.
Then, the researchers compared angry job applicants to ones who did not display any emotion. And this time the researchers showed study participants videos of both men and women applying for lower-status jobs.

Well thank you for that spirited response. I didn't intend to or think I was saying anything particularly offensive. I am sorry if I have offended you. I have actually spent a significant amount of time studying at collegiate and graduate school level, biology, chemistry, sociology, endocrinology, embryology, psychology, psychiatry, and so on. So no, I didn't get my facts from TV but let's keep going anyway. Men make a certain amount of estrogen and women make a certain amount of testosterone, each to a much less degree than their dominant sex hormone. Interestingly, obese males tend to produce more estrogen than their smaller male counterparts. At the same time big boys are supposed to be jolly, right? And how offensive is it to stumble upon and angry big boy? It boggles the senses. But why does it boggle the senses, because we have developed a subconscious expectation from anecdotal evidence. We have developed an expectation and we notice when that expectation is challenged. Women have every right to get as angry and violent as any male. I simply tend to think we are different at our root functioning level as an investigation in brain development will support. The human brain even develops differently depending upon which hormone is dominant during the earliest phases of development. To imagine this has no effect in later life.... I don't have a word for that. At any rate, maybe let go of concepts of 'better and worse', and think about simply what works. This gender discussion is simply a miniature part of a larger puzzle. No one is attacking female productivity or professionalism. Anyone who did would be ostracized. This is an investigation into why is it so shocking at all. We get things done differently and do them equally well but when things are done the same, someone says,” Hmm, that’s unusual.” I hope you can see that that’s all of it and thank you for calling me out. Is that Hillary inthe photo?

There has been no evidence that estrogen mellows out people. Ever heard of PMS? You most likely heard your "piece" of info on TV, but that does not make it a legitimate news source for science reporting. You'd read a real science journal for that. Your whole argument also doesn't take into account the historical, cultural factor of different gender expectations on men and women. How do you know that it is purely due to testosterone and not due to history and culture?
So before you tell people to "get" your arguments, please check it for accurate representation of facts. *Got it?*

I think this may be a result of underlying assumptions that women are supposed to be more emotionally stable due to the mellowing effect of estrogen versus men who are under the effect of testosterone (think steroids here!). We are different and that isn't bad. In general, a male manager who is not aggressive enough will likewise be shunned by both men and women as "weak". Sorry ladies but the whole of your history points toward balance whereas men are rightfully expected to be more aggressive. Testosterone is simply a powerful powerful steroid hormone and we run on it. That's the deal. Men who take estrogen mellow out and women who take testosterone become more aggressive. Got it?

96thdayofrage,
I had a feeling you were a republican, BAD MOVE!
You must not have child or Grand children. I do!
I also have a nephew that has served in The Forces for going on 25 years and has been to the Hot spots this has been his 6th tour on public record 7th on classified record.
With McCain, all we would get is the same torn up economy we have had for going on 8 years and he wants this war to continue till hell freezes over. Meaning he would have to renistate the draft. Just like what took place with vietnam.
I do not want my Grandchildren to have to go to war over what any one person whats.
We need to pull out re coupe, McCain & Bush are talking as if they what do go to war with Iran are the NUTS!
BUSH just wants to make money. He wants to raise the price of oil what ever the cost.
We need someone with experience in there that will correct the economy, help our overseas relations, stop let everything this country does go overseas.
We use to be the biggest, best, most productive nation in the world, what the hell happen, what me to tell you!
We let people come over to this country and we back to there and we told them, then we showed them for free how to bulid items. What are we doing now!
The same thing.
Stupid!
Vote Hillary!
The only one with experience that does not switch from one opinion to another.

I think this is very true and in a work place everyone calls an 'angry' woman a bitch where she just maybe more focused, determined, and strong minded where it seems its much more acceptable for a guy to be a d*ck in a work environment than a woman to be.

Whatever. Management at my work loses their temper all the time and they are rewarded for it. They've shown that they can be a bigger dick than their male colleagues.
