bulbo, San Jose: DIY Media Strategies from the Border

Five Wounds / Brookwood Terrace Broadcast Unit is a result of a collaboration between bulbo, the S.T.A.N.D., CommUniverCity and S.N.I. programs of the City of San Jose; and FUSE:collaboration (the FUSE:_cadre/montalvo artist research residency from SJSU), in conjunction with the 2nd Biennial 01SJ Global Festival of Art on the Edge.

    • Hmm, living in San Jose, I havn't really seen much gang related violence and problems. Most gang related problems that I hear about deal with the vietnamese population of SJ, but even that is not very big. I also work in probably the highest hispanic populous area of SJ and have yet to see gang related problems, but it could also be because of a strong presence of police patrolling the area, as well as city development that has been turning the area much nicer.

      Thanks for posting a response!!!

      I'm part of the bulbo art collective, who worked with the teens from the FW/BT neighborhood, to show them how to create videos.

      We are not from San Jose. And we would of never believed how heavily gang impacted the area is if it weren't for the contact we had with the teens and people from CommUniverCity and S.T.A.N.D. programs.

      From the outside it seems so peaceful. But the environment these teens grow in is hard. It doesn't give them much of an option outside gang related activities.

      And there are some places in Los Angeles that feel the exact same way. So this makes me think that the problem might be all over the US.
