An artwork (before and after pictures above) by Banksy, the enigmatic London-based artist, has been vandalized over the weekend leaving the valuable piece in a worthless condition, possibly forever. Who the hell does that?

I love banksy he makes points in direct and noticeable ways.
But come on people, it's grafitti, and to cry over someone defacing the defacing of a wall, is just silly.
Someone is just doing to him what he does to someone else, i'm sure he doesn't care.
Just because Banksy is 'cool' and everything, doesn't mean he's not still a Graffitti artist. No copyright, no permanance. - 3 years ago

take it as a lesson in impermanence and move on. that is part of painting on the street. most of my peices have been painted over as well... altho its usually whoever owns the building, rather than another painter. i think this is pretty funny actually.

"valuable piece in a worthless condition" This street art piece has no value because it is free.
Another thing is that Banksy (If he did this) knows the rules of the streets for art and graffiti. This kind of shit happens all the time, if someone didn't do that another person could have do it.

Well, fellow graffiti artist Shepard Fairey sure did get a lot of press for the defacing that the 'splasher' did of his street art.... *coincidentally* right around the time of his big NYC show (see link). As for selling out, well maybe to the street art purist, but personally I think that the more ways conscious art images are out in the public the better. Shepard Fairey's OBEY anti-war clothing in Nortstroms is a serious establishment coup in my book.

this can be summed up in two words- job security. Graffitti gives painters work to do to cover it up, which in turn provides a fresh canvass to portray the latest evolution of the artists inspiration. its really a win win. theres plenty of paint to go around, lets see what he comes up with next.

Destroying things it took so much time, thought, and talent to create isn't cool.
What a waste of priceless human talent.
Although it does make an intriguing statement about the stupidity of much of the "normal" gang-type graffiti that scars urban landscapes around the world.
If you're going to waste the time to create something for public display, at least try to make it meaningful and positive.

Part of street art is that it's not permanent. It's not made to be there forever. I love Banksy's work, but this kind of thing just comes with the territory. He is painting in a public place.

Each and every banksy piece is created to get attention...sometimes the attention is not the sort which was anticipated, but that is part of putting yourself out there...you have to be willing to be open to many types of reactions from positive to negative to anything in between and around that...right....

it's sad but it is in the nature of street art. it is constantly renewing itself and I am sure banksy doesn;t mind. he'll be back!

That really sums it up, this is probably done by someone who simultaneously loves Banksy, is jealous of him, and misunderstands him.
