Chilean outrage at busty Virgin Mary models

Image

A prominent Chilean fashion designer has sparked outrage by running a fashion show that will feature models dressed up like the Virgin Mary, some with ample and near-naked breasts. The Roman Catholic Church has condemned the organiser, Ricardo Oyarzun, who has also recieved telephone death threats and excrement smeared on his doorstep, while a conservative group tried unsuccessfully to block the show in court.

Oyarzun has however defended his show, with the statment, "there is no pornography here, there's no sex, there are no virgins menstruating or feeling each other up. This is artistic expression."

Blasphemy and rightful artistic expression? What do you think?

    • I personally dont feel offended by the use of the virgin mary as inspiration,
but the thong and the "all boobs out" effect can by a bit much.

here is a link for more photos.

    • thing is, I don't see it as disrespectful or distasteful - she is presented as beautiful, and as far as I've seen from the pictures, no aspercions are cast on her virginal quality. So what if she shows a bit of her breasts. Mary is often portrayed as sexually attractive in Christian imagery, as well as pure and mother-like - she represents all stages of woman, so why is it disrespectful or distasteful to show her sexuality?

and as for religion remaining 'sacred' - it should be the first thing to be made un'sacred', given all the divisions and conflict it causes.

    • and what is his "artistic expression," to show that the objectification of women is prevalent in society" i would really like to know, and for those making death threats and pooping, maybe there is some "artistic expression" behind that too

    • Look at the bright side, radical muslims would just cut his head off or suicide bomb his town. I'd say the sworn enemy of the left (Christians) are pretty tame compared to your new favorite allies (hamas).

    • I find it strange to attempt to combine the Virgin Mary with the fashion of the modern world. Sadly, i cannot say that i'm okay with this i may not be Catholic but i find it to be a bit disrespectful to represent the Virgin in such a distasteful manner.

    • I just saw on one of the archaeoloogy shows that historically, Hebrew Women were Bigger-Breasted than Canaanite Women...(supported thru Religious Clay Statuary)...

    • He got poo smeared on his doorstep?! Poo! You really can't even begin to call yourself a Christian if you're going to go on poo-smearing rampages.
