Ugh! Ugg boots cause 'serious foot' problems

Image
mattbrawn
A local doctor in Philadelphia has said that Ugg boots can cause 'serious' problems with your feet and that if not dealt with soon, wearers could need surgery to correct the damage from the lack of support boots.

He's come up with an solution though...

"What I've been doing is making them a sport orthotic, the type of orthotic you use for running even tennis. Making it fit the Uggs. If it fits the sneaker, it will fit the Uggs.

Still, not sure how much I'd take his advice, he thinks they look good as well.

    • I have 2 pairs of ugg boots and sipper uggs, all were gifts. I love uggs they are so comfy and very warm, I don't wear them as a fashion statement just for comfort. However I don't believe they should cost as much as they do I've had my slippers for just over a year and the fur lining as worn away already. Comfort 10/10 Value 6/10 anybody that pays that amount of money would expect the sole to wear out first not the lining

    • I own a pair I hated them too before I bought them, but I did manage to find a really cute pair that was comfortable. The problem is that after a while my foot started leaning to the left and right in them, my socks ended up wet sometimes from the snow slush, and my end step started to feel sore from lack of support.
Some of them are cute to look at but horrible to wear, I have learned my lesson and I will never buy a pair again.

    • I think that Ugg boots are really horrific. I can't imagine why anyone would want to wear them anyway. I wish everyone would stop wearing them. I cringe every time I see them.

    • I wore my new Ugg Tall boots for the first time just over two weeks ago. They were warm and snug. I went out in the snow in them thinking they were a sensible foot attire in the snow and fell over consequently breaking my wrist. Whilst in hospital I was asked how the accident had happened by the nurse and I explained. She retorted that those boots should have a government health warning! Her friend had been out one evening in Ugg boots and had fallen in snow and smashed her shoulder and had been hospitalised for a week. Has anyone else encountered similar problems?

    • I hate Uggs. My dad got me a pair for christmas and me and my mom were both freaking out because they are so sick. I felt bad for my dad though, because my moms last gift under the tree was a pair of Uggs. Oh well, when I returned them I got $170 out of the deal. $170!! Stupid.

Ha, no. my dad tried and we gave him credit, he knew they were the "in" thing, but im saying "stupid" because believe it or not, UGGS cost ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY DOLLARS. its ridiculous to have to pay so much for something that is so disgusting.

    • A lot of responses seem to be of the I-hate-these-boots-and-people-who-wear-them-because-I-am-obviously-the-end-all-be-all-in-fashion ilk.

I'd wager many of these self-appointed fashionistas also think that pre-ripped jeans that cost $200 are the height of cool; or that camouflage anything is acceptable; or that body piercing makes them look "hot".

Do any of you really care what other people wear?!? If you were alive in the 60's, you'd probably be out there with the other straight-laced, buttoned-down arbiters of good taste, screaming for those "dirty hippies" to take a bath, put some shoes on, and get a job.

Get over yourselves. You're really not as cool as you think. (In fact, no one is.)

And the doctor's claims about foot problems? What a CROC! (Pun definitely intended.) There are many, many people who not only walk around barefoot most of the time, but actually run marathons wearing no shoes (and hence, no "support") -- with no discernible foot problems. People like Barefoot Ted: http://www.barefootted.com/.

I'll give him credit, though, for latching onto a current trend and alloying it with good ol' scare tactics to create a market for his "cure".

    • Only footwear trend uglier than Uggs is Crocs. They look like cheap plastic hooves. WTF are people thinking?

... and don't even get me started on flip flops. They're great on occasion, but not for everyday wear.

here here! I hate Crocs so much....oh and heads up to the people that wear them. Even though they say they wont cause food odor THEY DO! Ive sat next to many a foot reeking Croc wearing businessman on a train....not cool.

Im ok with flip flops but really only on girls...and in the summer with a flowy dress or skirt...and never NEVER with socks. EVER.

I think you girls are in need of a trip to the islands. Any islands, because you'll get used to your flip-flops and get used to seeing every one in them and quick.

Is it the name? Flip-flops? Call them jandals instead of flip flops, it works in New Zealand. :)

      Aloha!

    • I think your headline might be messed up. Should be "Hundred dollar Ugg boots remain superfluous and irrelevant in an economy where no one should be buying hundred dollar boots or caring about their health benefits." Oh sh*t, was that a run on?

    • I'm surprised that no one is discussing the REAL issue here. They kill the sheep to manufacture Uggs. Again, sheep are killed, not just shaven...killed to produce these shoes. Does that seem okay to you?

    • I don't think this is true...unless you wear your uggs to play sports.

I use them for walking and at work since they're so comfy on the inside!

But who wears these boots to play sports?!?!?...that's why you have athletic shoes...boots are not the type of shoes to be running in anyway

    • These boots are for severe weather conditions not everyday wear. Everyone should Know their feet well enough to know if it hurts it's not right. Arch supports are available at department stores, drug stores, shoe stores .... I just transfer them from shoe to shoe if needed. Ugs are not Joseph Seibels or birkenstocks...

    • Hey all Im going to say is that at least Uggs arent as ugly as Crocs. Those things are hideous and I cringe whenever I see someone wearing them pretending like they are fashionable.

On a note more related to this story this is retarded because Uggs arent any different from most shoes today in that they offer little support. All those super fashionable ballet flats and heels have little support and popular mens creedlers have absolutely no support too. People just need to get a good pair of orthodics and slip them in any pair of shoes if they want to prevent foot trauma.

    • I'm a man and I wear Ugg knockoffs (only $45) at home instead of slippers. Yes, they make them for men. My wife makes fun of me (she has real Uggs). Say what you will but they're really warm and comfortable although I would never wear them out of the house.

    • Some of you Ugg haters need to get outside more and surf or SCUBA dive or something. When I get out of this cold Northern California water after freediving for abalone or kayaking, there's nothing cozier than my uggs and the last thing I'm thinking about is what fashion statement I'm making.

They suck for long walks, especially on pavement, but when your toes are cold, they rule!

    • clearly everyone freaking out about UGGS and lack of fashion didn't realize that the majority of us ugg wearers are because they are freaking comfortable!! Perhaps you should walk in someone else's shoes(uggs) before you judge!!

    • I wear mine as house slippers.........and I've yet to see a pair of slippers with arch support!!! All podiatrists want to make you orthotics.....they make extra $$$ that way! Look at all the other types of shoes out there that don't have a specific arch support........flats, sandals, flip-flops....if we can wear them in the summer without harm, why can't we wear flat boots in the winter?

    • ah! everyone here (nor-cal) wears them with their pajamas because it's "cute." like many trends it only looks cute if the wearer is well.... already hot. otherwise it looks like your going through a rough brake up or something. ;)
      lmao...yes, I have a pair - but i wear them sparingly.

    • Due, when it's 20 below, I wouldn't be caught dead without Uglies, but when it hot, they're just not! I have discovered after stealing my sister's pair that they are the only thing that keeps me from turning on the heater at full blast, kinds good for the enviro. However, most Uglies are made in, yup, china. The real aussie ones are much simpler and look like eskimo boots. And they cost 15$. Wish I could go there.

    • it's all about how you use your foot. I used to have horrible pain when I wore uggs or the chinese flat shoes. I have since taken a tai chi class where I learned how to use my feet properly...weight in the center of the foot and evenly distributed. I used to grip my feet is what I noticed and when I relaxed my foot there was no more problem.uggs are warm and cozy and if some folks are more interested in a fashion statement than comfort then that is their problem. they don''t have to look. they are certainly not for everyone! nothing is!

    • Guilty Pleasure, but I never wear them in public.

I love my boots (not Uggs but similar) and I'm a guy. I also love my $4 mocks (fake crocks) I get at the Asian variety store.
All you haters obviously have never tried either of these shoes because if you did you would not say such mean things about the people who wear them.

    • Many say not having support is good for foot health. It balances all the muscles in the foot. That's how the Nike Free became so popular among runners. And afterall, feet had been fine for centuries before Dr. Schole.

    • Maybe the female uggs are ugly, but I walk to school in the snow in mine and these things are amazing; my feet never get wet and always stay warm, plus, despite their moniker, they don't look like massive uggly boots and they stay pretty clean. My only complaint is that they're made from sheep. The males boots don't look anything like popular female ones. But I tried around 30 brands of boots and these are the babies I rely on in this nasty cold weather.

    • Ugg boots are a travesty against fashion. I have no idea why anyone wears them. They really don't look as though they support your feet & good to hear it's now being taken more seriously.
