It still exists! Stone carving/sculpture studio in Long Island City, NYC

wdandins
With all the metallic and glass high rise condos flying onto the Long Island City sky scape, A small stone carving studio specializing in architectural stone seems a little out of place. But people in the neighborhood are always interested on what project Daniel Sinclair is up to.

Stone carving was once a great pastime of New York City. All the old architecture in New York City adds such a special aspect to life here in New York. Most of it was done in the early 20th Century. Some of the most charming neighborhoods in New York City are dressed with stone ornamentation. SoHo, Brooklyn Heights, the West Village, and the Lower East Side just to name a few, are locations where stone architecture stirs in the hearts of visitors, renters, and home owners alike.

"If I were God we would still be making buildings this way. I think they are beautiful." Daniel Sinclair has been here in Long Island City the last 30+ years. "I think I've become a regular Long Island City character" he told me. Dan doesn't like to draw a whole lot of attention to himself he has a very calm and confident way about himself. He would much rather let his special talent do the talking. He studied in Italy for many years and has survived here in New York carving eclectically refined, stone, fireplace mantels.

Although there is still a call for specialized stone fabrication, Mr. Sinclair is currently in the process of creating a new repertoire of small scale figurative statues carved from white marble. His true passion, to portray the simplistic beauty in life is being displayed in his newest sculptures.
