As an avid cyclist and former motorcyclist, I said that riding in Manhattan is like having a death wish because of the realities of the dangers inherent in such a behavior. In the motorcycle world (or murder-cycles as the emergency room techs referred to them after my brother's near fatal tangle with a motorist years ago), there is a saying that there are two types of riders: those who have gone down and those who are going down.
The scarier thing about bikes over motorcycles is that you rarely have even a fraction of the protection in the form of helmets, leathers, or even body armor that you'd likely wear on a motorcycle.
I no longer ride motorcycles, but do ride my bike... carefully. I'd just simply NEVER ride a bike in Manhattan. It's way too risky. Blame the motorists all you want, but blame doesn't get your teeth, legs, or life back.

I live in Amsterdam for part of each year and use a bike to get around in this bike-friendly country (The Netherlands). it is up to BOTH the biker AND the driver of an automobile to be aware of the open door moment. accidents do happen. it was sad to read of this unfortunate event in NYC. bikes are a good way to get around in congested cities. and automobile drivers need to be aware of the rules of the road which include bicyclists. I am 62 years old. heads up everybody (drivers and bicyclists)

Have any of your ever been hit by a car door? Or by a car? I have and it sucks. In fact, it f*cking hurts. And what's worse is that when I've gotten hit, the drivers thought it was my fault. And I ride cautiously. So dontipo, who was the careless one? The guy riding his bike in the bikelane? Or the driver who parked in the bike lane and then didn't look when opening their door? And just because it's hectic to ride a bike in Manhattan or any city for that matter, should we all just hop in our cars and make it safer that way?

i'm going to try and give the benefit of the doubt and hope that dontipo meant- A person dying (cyclist) because of not paying attention to the surroundings (truck driver). if not, then sorry but you completely missed what the article said. and to state that biking in manhattan is a death wish, while comically true, is still no excuse for what happened. any reasonable and careful person getting out of their car looks behind them to make sure it's ok to open the door. and if you're not, you should be!

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, if Guilianni cared a rats ass about the environment, wouldn't he have provided safe corridors for cyclists like exist in Europe and therefore encouraged people to cycle more.
I had to spin that against Guilianni, but it is a valid question.
The same can be asked of any city any where in the nation. Why are they so slow to get it together and act in a responsible manner? Why does America trail the world in so many ways rather than lead it - (not that we should always)?
Case in point:

This page was last updated 2 years ago... Hopefully the numbers have gone down with more bike lanes cropping up, people being more aware as more bikes are on the streets.
On the other hand, with more bikes on the streets...there are more bikers to be hurt by doors. Plus, with bike lanes, those are usually just outside parallel parking spots...which might increase the chances of a dooring than if the biker was allowed full use of the car lane and could swing well wide of an open door.
So sad. Be safe. Wear a helmet!!!!!

"Not paying attention to the surroundings" Did you actually take the time to read the article?
"The truck's driver was issued summonses for parking in front of a fire hydrant and blocking the bike lane while the truck's passenger was issued a summons for "opening a door unsafely."
Riding a bike in any metropolitan area comes with its fair share of risks and dangers. I was hit by a car less than two months ago, but nothing really frightens me more than open car doors.
