Jefferson's Change of Perspective

Recent hyperspectral imaging of Thomas Jefferson’s rough draft of the Declaration of Independence shows that Jefferson made an interesting word correction when writing the document. He had originally had written the phrase “our fellow-subjects,” but changed it to “our fellow-citizens.” This appears to be a moment of enlightenment. The moment when Jefferson started thinking of himself and his neighbors, not as subjects of another nation, but as citizens of their own... as Americas.
