Why a high IQ doesn't mean you're smart

IS GEORGE W. BUSH stupid? It's a question that occupied a good many minds of all political persuasions during his turbulent eight-year presidency. The strict answer is no. Bush's IQ score is estimated to be above 120, which suggests an intelligence in the top 10 per cent of the population. But this, surely, does not tell the whole story. Even those sympathetic to the former president have acknowledged that as a thinker and decision-maker he is not all there. Even his loyal speechwriter David Frum called him glib, incurious and "as a result ill-informed". The political pundit and former Republican congressman Joe Scarborough accused him of lacking intellectual depth, claiming that compared with other US presidents whose intellect had been questioned, Bush junior was "in a league by himself". Bush himself has described his thinking style as "not very analytical".

How can someone with a high IQ have these kinds of intellectual deficiencies? Put another way, how can a "smart" person act foolishly? Keith Stanovich, professor of human development and applied psychology at the University of Toronto, Canada, has grappled with this apparent incongruity for 15 years. He says it applies to more people than you might think. To Stanovich, however, there is nothing incongruous about it. IQ tests are very good at measuring certain mental faculties, he says, including logic, abstract reasoning, learning ability and working-memory capacity - how much information you can hold in mind.

But the tests fall down when it comes to measuring those abilities crucial to making good judgements in real-life situations. That's because they are unable to assess things such as a person's ability to critically weigh up information, or whether an individual can override the intuitive cognitive biases that can lead us astray.

This is the kind of rational thinking we are compelled to do every day, whether deciding which foods to eat, where to invest money, or how to deal with a difficult client at work. We need to be good at rational thinking to navigate our way around an increasingly complex world. And yet, says Stanovich, IQ tests - still the predominant measure of people's cognitive abilities - do not effectively tap into it. "IQ tests measure an important domain of cognitive functioning and they are moderately good at predicting academic and work success. But they are incomplete. They fall short of the full panoply of skills that would come under the rubric of 'good thinking'."

I got the H1N1 saturday evening .. i was laying in bed bout to cry and i got to thinking how i could make myself feel better, i started thinking bout knives and stabbing myself. so i lay in bed thinking bout this and tossing and turning about ready 2 cry!! I would not recommened anyone too take this medicine!!

Severe behavior problems, Fits of rage, Depression, Crying uncontrollably I gave my 4 year old son 2 doses of Tamiflu. After the second dose his behavior became very violent. He is usually a mild-mannered child and became 'a monster'. He was screaming, hitting, kicking etc. for hours. He looked as though he was out of it during these rages. I called his Doc the next day and they said to take him off of Tamiflu. It was terrible to see my boy have to deal w/ these side effects. Even 4 days later he is still showing some abnormal behaviors. NO TAMIFLU. We need to come together and get this drug out.

Violent uncontrollable dry heaving and severe nausea, crying uncontrollably due to utter misery and exhaustion. This was after only 2nd dose. I was witnessing this medical misjustice happening to my wife as she lay in a fetal position on the floor with her head in a trash can,because she was to weak to get to the bathroom. I will never forget my feeling of utter helplessness,believing my wife was going die right there. We all need to make sure that this drug is pulled off the market. How many have really succumbed from the treatment, when they blame it on the virus. Think about it. I don't believe that I'm allowed to say what I want. The war is on! Please,under no circumstance give this drug to your child.

hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, disorientated, anxiety, depression.... none of which I have EVER experienced before The first day of taking the Tamiflu I did not have any side effects. The evening of the 2nd day, about an hour after my 4th dose, I was attempting to study for an exam I had in a couple of days and started crying and repeating "the information won't go in my mind." My parents then told me to go to bed, and while in bed I started thinking of how I would feel better if I cut myself and released the pain, or if I would just hit my head against the wall. I NEVER have had suicidal thoughts before, nor have I ever hurt myself, so these thoughts confused me even more. I felt like a crazy person trying to talk themselves out of hurting themselves. Finally I rolled over and saw dark figures surrounding my bed. I turned on the light and rocked back and forth convincing myself I wasn't crazy and crying uncontrollably. My parent's came back later and found me and I told them what happened after I had calmed down. This was by far the scariest side effect I have ever experienced, I legitimately thought I was losing my mind. Over two hours later I am still extremely disoriented. I'd rather have H1N1 for a month than experience that again. FDA , FTC vs. Dr. Andrew Weil: is America's health freedom being threatened?

The FDA and the FTC have issued a letter threatening criminal prosecution of Dr. Andrew Weil and his company claiming that this well-respected integrative medical doctor has made false statements regarding his immune boosting formulas.
Now, there has always been a little separation between those who favor allopathic medicine and those who favor “alternative” methods. But Americans have always had the freedom to choose - that is part of what makes this a “free” country.
Whether or not a person believes in herbal medicines, they should absolutely have the freedom to make the personal choice should they want to go that route.
It is vital that as Americans and consumers, we stay informed of truths and of profit-driven opinions.
The main herb in question here is astragalus, which does have scientific research supporting its immune enhancing effects. Why then would these government agencies be attacking Dr. Weil?
The answer seems to stem from profits, and those profits are a big deal.

It is important to understand that the Swine Flu vaccine has not been scientifically proven to be directly effective in humans against the swine flu. And yet the FDA has approved it for use, and touts it as “a magic pill”.
It is also important to review the information on substances that have been used successfully for centuries to boost immunity as well as medicines that have only just been created in “hopes” of being effective.
Unfortunately, it does not seem that we are being given the whole story.
Before making any decisions about something as precious as one’s health, it is vital to really investigate and look for the facts.
It is critical to not blindly accept that a vaccine will save millions of lives. Just as it is critical to not blindly accept that an herb will save millions of lives.
Time to ask questions, seek answers and dig a little deeper than just what is surface level.

Our US "News" media never whispers any hint of possibility of side effects of these legal drugs being a possible part of the cause.

Imagine a cocktail of these drugs in American "troubled teens" and prisoners. This is common in our vastly over-medicated American society. The problem is often combined with other seemingly harmless drugs that often have serious confusion and violence producing side effects. Many people take 5 or more medications at the same time. This is considered a good thing in the US.

Add this to a population who are missing critical components of their diets. UK Prisons are cutting violent behaviour by a third by simply correcting that deficiency. If Obama, as our next United States President, is not whipped to his knees by the Powerful Health "Care" Industry, he could clear prisons and youth detentions drastically in the USA within a year, maximum.
