Auto-Tuney
// April 30, 2009 by joshuahellerI have to admit, I love the Auto-Tuner. It's a tool that's traditionally been used to subtly correct the pitch of pop singers. Producers can take a pretty face and turn them into a star, even if they lack proper vocal chords. Producer / rapper / singer-songwriter T-Pain took Auto-Tune to new heights by emphasizing the technology very apparently.
In early February, the rapper was featured on comed-usicians, The Lonely Island's "I'm on a Boat"

Get on the boat motherf*cker.
This is perhaps the first example of the Auto-Tune being used to be funny.
A few weeks later the staff at Vimeo, used the technique to showcase a new employee.

Last week the Auto-Tune was used as a way to make the news more radio friendly, with "Auto-Tune the News"

Virology
// April 15, 2009 by joshuahellerIt's only Wednesday, but this has already been an excellent week in virology. I'll be calling viral videos virology, so it sounds more important than it really is.
- A list of the 100 most iconic internet videos was leaked to the internets. Nearly every classic is on that list.
- Billy Joel is updated with "we didn't start the flame war". Which tackles the subject of internet jerks.
- Lindsay Lohan tries to get a date.
What else is popular this week? Are we missing something? Add the best new stuff to the tag viral videos on Current.com and it might be featured in our daily show Current Virals.

There are dozens of ways for things to go viral but this is probably the easiest:

Comic Theory: The inherent LOLability of cuteness
// April 08, 2009 by joshuahellerI am interested in why things are funny. This the first part in an on-going series titled Comic Theory. This post asks about the popularity of LOLCats.

Try explaining why you think LOLcats is funny to somebody who doesn't speak your language. Unless you have the pictures in front of you, you'll be at a loss for words.
LOLcats is inexplicably hilarious. Images of cute animals with surreal captions in a fake language, doesn't scream comedy, but some how we laugh.
Mammals are instinctually driven towards cute things. Large eyes and round bellies, make mothers want to care for their young. These urges have been used in marketing to sell products. Evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould has suggested that over time Mickey Mouse has been drawn with cuter features, to increase his popularity.
I think the success of LOLcats has to do with the cuteness of its subjects. Never before in human history has cuteness been so accessible. This internet meme is successful because it draws from the depths of our primordial genetics.
The captions are strange enough that we can identify them as jokes. This acknowledgment compounded with our primordial relationship to the images makes us laugh out loud.
(Familiar cute stuff + mediocre jokes = inherent LOLability.)
Are LOLCats even that funny to you? Are there other things that you find inexplicably hilarious?

Current Comedy relies on the funny videos, pictures, and writings that you add. You might see a funny video somewhere on the internets, why not add that link to Current.com? Maybe there was a hilarious LOLCat that the world needs to see, submit it to our site.
But Current Comedy is not just funny things you see, sometimes its about the funny things you create. Are you a comedian or a member of a sketch troupe? We want you. Add your funniness to our site. There are chances for your material to be featured, and other opportunites may definitely arise.
