This story has been making the rounds in the crafting community for a few weeks now, but this is the first time anyone's actually crunched the numbers. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act is one of those things that sounds like a great idea, but...isn't.

Because these regulations (which require that all clothes and toys for children under the age of 12 undergo third party testing for hazardous materials) don't have exemptions for small, independent crafters, the cost of testing could drive many of them out of business. If you're a fan of turning to Etsy or your local indie craft fair for kids toys and clothes--or even thrift stores!--CPSIA could eliminate that option. I'm all for safe products, but wouldn't a little common sense go a long way in this situation?
