The 'Disappeared' in Rio

Image

This is a grim story about life on the streets in Rio -- over 10,000 people have 'disappeared' since the early '90s. What that really means is that they were killed by drug dealers, death squads, or corrupt police officers. And nothing happens. The Guardian story really turns it into more than just statistics; highly recommended.

    • In the projects, or favelas, of Rio de Janeiro, former police officers have formed militias to protect inhabitants of the favela. However, in the wake of recent violence, there are reports that the militias are extorting innocent people in exchange for protection from the drug cartels.
