According to local media, the Portuguese police have issued a statement today saying that they are officially closing the case of the missing toddler Madeleine McCann.
In Portugal this week, two local newspapers have reported that the police authorities are planning to close the case, despite the little girl still missing and her parents still main suspects. The newspapers also stated that there was a distinct lack of evidence for the case to stay open. This news however, does not take away the titles of official suspects, Kate and Gerry, the parents of little Madeleine. Original suspect, ex pat, Robert Murat is still also, a suspect

Madeleine went missing from her parents holiday apartment on the 3rd of May 2007. The family from Rothley in Leicestershire have spent much of their time travelling the world trying to publicise their daughter’s disappearance as much as possible. In the light of the recent news, the parents of the missing four year old have stated that they will await confirmation of the reports before announcing their own plans.

The Correio da Manha newspaper said on Tuesday that sources within Portugal's judicial police said they "do not have sufficient evidence to allow formal charges to be brought against the McCann’s in the disappearance of their daughter".

In the newspaper, the Jornal de Noticias, it claimed that the police had not felt they had enough evidence to charge either or all of the suspects, including Mr Murat. The paper said,

"The police have not found the guilty.”

One of the newspapers who has made the claim this week has said that the case has already been closed officially. One other said that the case will be closed within the next few days.
