Hindu extremists have attacked a Christian orphanage in India

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, has added his voice to calls for an immediate end to the violence being waged against Christians in India’s Orissa state.

“I hope that Christians and people of faith around the world will make known their horror at this violence, their support for the rebuilding of lives and the churches, orphanages and schools destroyed, and for work towards future reconciliation,” Williams said in a letter sent to the Most Rev. Joel Dal, moderator of North India.

Hindu extremists, some wielding machetes, have been on the rampage in the north-eastern state since the murder of Hindu leader Swami Lakshmananda Saraswati and four of his associates last month. Christian homes, orphanages and churches have been burned down, while 16 people have been killed. In one of the worst incidents, a young woman was burned alive when she tried to protect children from an attack on their Christian orphanage.

    • Stories like this make me believe more and more that the world is becoming hell itself. Violence around the world and the abundance of it that we see these days is going to peoples heads. Thank You War.....the world is now becoming not only a battlefield spread across thousands and thousands of miles in desolate countries, its becoming battlefields in the minds of the impressionable. Not even something as innocent as children can sway any of this.

    • more people have been killed in the name of Christianity than all other religions combined. However it is not the religion itself which causes this, but the people who claim to know God's will. Does anyone remember this little nugget
      " God wants me to be president."

    • This is sad and christians in India are not the GLUTTON controlled Christians of America. These people live by faith and sacrifice daily. They are peacefull and loving.

Did you know the KKK uses the Holy Bible as a referance to their beliefs??

      Everyone can use whatever they want and misinterpret it or use it to it's own belief. It's called Blasphemy, yet it looks the KKK did not read that part, neither you? Have about if you read it correctly?

      The bible was meant to be used for Love, not for hatred not to be sensationalized. You and the KKK are doing the same thing by using it to attack. So as the people that used it hundreds of years ago to do such things like calling for a War.

      It is stupid people that kill and go to war, Not the Bible nor the Pope, nor true Christians.

      Pettaro, i am not with the KKK....... I was responding to your previous comment. What you had said made it seem like christians and jews dont have a history of being violent because of their religion. Every religion has done this. That is why I am a part of none of them.

      May I point out that it has been the far right christians who supported Bush and the invasion of Iraq? The same group who now supports McCain and the whole "bomb,bomb, bomb,,,bomb Iran." on this the 1982nd day since "mission accomplished"
      Or maybe we could talk about Pat Robertson, The leader of the christian self-rightious, calling for the assassination of a democratically elected leader of a foreign nation.
      And another note to the self-rightious right, abstinence does work, if it applies to republican sheep abstaining from election day.

      Christians and Jews are not peaceful religions, they are just as blood thristy as any other religion.

      More killing so far has been done in the name of the Cross and by order of Jehovah to the Israelites than Muslims have killed innocents.

    • This is the most horrible kind of violence; religious strife. People always seem to be willing to commit all sorts of atrocities on the "unbelievers" of the true faith. This kind of ideology never gets better and it creates tremendous suffering.
