Aaron Simoneaux pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to an animal in August, was sentenced Wednesday.
A public defender said Simoneaux had an irrational fear of dogs and killed an acquaintance's chow last New Year's Eve because he had been attacked at age 13 by another chow. But a prosecutor said Simoneaux "carved up" the dog in an unprovoked attack.
The American Press in Lake Charles said the dog, more than 10 years old, was at a sitter's home for the night. It wandered over to Simoneaux because fireworks popping near the yard it was in scared it.
The dog's caretaker, meanwhile, was inside getting his kids something to drink. He came back outside in time to see Simoneaux cutting the dog up.
